Newspaper reading is essential as part of a library period

I find that many of today's generation of youngsters are so absorbed in their social media activities that they are far removed from current happenings. They may not be interested in engaging in conversations with those who are discussing some current Indian or global news, but at least they should be aware of the goings-on.

In school, there is a library period where kids are taken to the library and quietly read books. I feel it would be good if at least a part of this reading session is also devoted to staying updated on the news, at least for middle school and senior school sections. In college, too, other than those who have taken up History as a subject and would surely be staying abreast of news, other students would not necessarily be doing so. Perhaps they, too, should be encouraged to spend some time in the library during their breaks between lessons and read newspapers.

Do the youngsters in your family even read newspapers today, and not just the cricket or other sports news?

Slowly newspaper reading habits are coming down, especially in the younger generation. However, they are accustomed to watching small videos connected to current affairs that are being uploaded on social media sites. Watching and hearing is preferred over reading these days.
Many of the private schools do not have a library period. But they will have some study periods and in that period students should study some subject books and a teacher will be overseeing them and clearing their doubts. But no student is allowed to read newspapers.
As mentioned by the author, schools should encourage and see that students will have reading habits. Instead of hanging on to their smartphones, they should read newspapers so that they will get to know what is happening around in this world.

Unfortunately, the habit of reading newspapers is now going down not only in the adults but also in the students. I remember there was a time when reading a newspaper was considered an essential activity in our lives. It was a must for those students who were preparing for competitive examinations.

It is true that social media has become very much popular and people are spending a lot of time in it without any constructive output or positive return. Students are also obsessed with this evil. They are wasting their time in seeing how many people are viewing their posts and how many are liking it. It is a useless activity benefiting only the owners of that social media site.
I strongly feel that reading a newspaper was a great habit and still it is a great habit as it will pay handsome dividend to one who is regularly engaging in this activity.
In schools and colleges students should be encouraged to read newspaper.

The advice of the author is very valuable but many parents may consider this advice outdated. These parents don't encourage their children to visit the library or to read newspaper either at the residence or in the library. They think this is wastage of time. The children of such parents may score good marks and get admission in medical/engineering course, but thanks to their parents wrong guidance, they end up becoming ignoramus.

There are exceptions but the general trend is described above.

Reading at least one newspaper everyday is as essential as one time food.

Newspaper reading is a precursor as well as facilitator and trainer to more wide library use.
I had benefited a lo from newspaper reading even from my school days. even now though my reading habit has almost become nil, I subscribe and read one newspaper daily. I helps me to stay update and also aware of the daily major events in a brief way.

The author has very rightly hinted that we should read at least one English News paper regularly to be familiar with the latest events of the globe apart from the acquaintance of the different new words to be used after understanding their meanings.
Learning cannot be complete if we don't have the quest to learn more and the words being used from our end should represent the same as we want to convey our readers.
A regular reading of a noted newspaper will definitely improve our overall performance in terms of knowledge and richness of word - stocks.

The author is right in many schools of yester years we had library period in that we have been taught how to locate a book in library shelves, how to read the newspapers etc., by our class teacher. Later in college it helped me and my brother well as we got a work in our college library to work as a 'Student Aid Worker' in which we did cataloguing books etc.,
Presently in a Government School of area wherein my brother's daughter studying ninth standard is provided with a library card for selecting/taking books for reading from nearest library. It is really helpful to a student to know about the variety of newspapers and books are found around us.

I want to add that though today we can have all the information and data in internet and social media and access that using our smartphone but still I feel that newspaper has its own value.
I also had stopped reading newspaper since last 10-12 years but last year I realised that instead of wasting my 2-3 hours in the smartphone, I could get a glimpse of what was happening in the world just by sparing half an hour by reading a newspaper. So, I asked the newspaper vendor to deliver it to me regularly. Now I am reading it regularly and incidentally all the topics that I am able to add in ISC knowledge centre are from newspaper only.
Spare sometime in reading newspaper and you will find how useful it is.
