Corporal punishment: Was it good? Your opinion please

Nowadays, the term 'corporal punishment' is considered terrible and such punishment is sometime a punishable offence. But when we used to study in school, this was considered perfectly normal. Without corporal punishment, the education was not even considered complete.

During my school days, I was subjected to beating in school and also by my father. It was perfectly normal for me. Now I find that regular beating at that time was beneficial for me. Not only due to my various extra-curricular activities (which I don't want to mention here), I used to get thrashing particularly by my Maths teacher and my Biology teacher. In our home, I received thrashing from my father mainly for English.

The result was evident. I got very good marks in Mathematics, Biology and English in Board examinations (Xth and XIIth). I firmly believe that regular beating was instrumental to my successes in examinations. I am giving one example. Once, as a student of VIth Standard, I mentioned 'superior than' in front of my father. He thrashed me repeatedly and taught : "Remember: Always use 'to' after Prefer-Refer-Junior-Senior-Inferior-Supirior. Never ever use 'than' after these six words". After that thrashing, even now, I never use 'than' after these six words.

So, I think corporal punishment is good for improving performance of students, although the modern educationists opine otherwise.

What is your opinion about corporal punishment?

I don't want to say it is good or bad. It differs from case to case and situation to situation. But as per the law corporal punishment is not acceptable. Violence against students is not allowed as per Article 21 of the Constitution of India which protects the Right to Life and Dignity including the Right to Education for children up to 14 years of age. Article 39 (e) of the Constitution of India says that children of tender age should not be abused. Such laws are in place to see that children are not subjected to corporal punishment.
I always feel it is better to keep a stick in the hand but rarely use it. Students should have a fear towards his/ her teachers at the same time they should have respect also. If somebody is abusing a child often even for a small issue the student will have fear only but not respect. Corporal punishment is the ultimate and should be used very rarely but threatening the students by showing the stick in hand is OK I feel.

Student life is the best time for learning discipline and manners. If one doesn't learn these things at that time then one will never learn it in one's life.
In earlier times teachers kept a strict discipline in the school and students were beaten regularly and it was a very common thing. Even the parents appreciated it and encouraged the teachers to beat the students whenever they do something wrong.
I strongly feel that it was a great method and whether we call it punishment or any other word it was required. Today also it is badly required but unfortunately the mind set of people is changing and they cannot tolerate any punishment by teachers to the children.
I remember our mathematics teacher was very strict and due to that only we could learn the subject seriously as we had no other option except to be attentive and remain serious in the class and learn the topic. He was so strict that he used to observe if any student did a mischief he asked a question and if the student could not answer then he started beating him mercilessly. The system worked foolproof.

    Knowledge is power.
