NEP-2020: Stress on IKS, Languages, Culture and Values

The new National Education Policy (NEP) has brought many new concepts and approaches which were earlier neglected. One of these new approaches is stress to be given to the Indian Knowledge systems (IKS), Indian languages, culture and values. The salient features of NEP in this direction are mentioned below:

    (a) The NEP gives adequate focus on literature and scientific vocabulary of Indian languages. This in turn helps studying technical subjects in Indian languages.
    (b) The NEP encourages research on the history and future progress of Indian languages.
    (c) The policy envisages developing a highly qualifed and enthusiastic language faculty in the universities.
    (d) The new policy also gives stress on strengthening national institutes for promotion of classical languages and literature.
    (e) The new policy plans to set up Indian Institute of Translation and Interpretation (IITI).
    (f) The policy plans to develop cultural awareness of India's traditional knowledge systems.
    (g) The NEP-2020 promotes traditional arts and lok vidya.
    (h) The new policy also calls for setting up of artist-in-residence in the University complex.

I welcome the stress given by the NEP-2020 to promote Indian languages, culture, knowledge and values and want proper implementation of the policy.

What is your opinion in this regard?

It is a step in the right direction, I feel. Indian culture, values, languages and knowledge are enormous and many foreign countries are learning our languages and trying to use our knowledge base for their development. Unfortunately, in our country, no efforts have been made so far to see that all the students will learn about Indian culture and other aspects. So it is the duty of the government to see that all the students will learn about this and protect Indian culture and heritage.
All teachers and parents should understand this and see that their students and children will not deviate from our culture. Translating technical words into local languages may be a good effort that will help people understand the subject well.

It is a good step in a correct direction. India is a diverse country and has many cultures in its fold.
Unfortunately, our country became slave under the invaders and for a long time we were under Mughal rule and then we came under British rule. With the great efforts of our freedom fighters we finally got independence in 1947 and started developing in a fast pace. The formation of a number of PSU units and emphasis on infrastructure projects helped us to progress.
In last few years we have seen many initiatives taken by the present regime which are helping the country to progress in an accelerated pace.
NEP is one such initiative which is bringing paradigm shift in our approach to learning and also learning about our culture and values.
I have full hopes and also wish that all these efforts will make our country to rise to our past glorious levels.

    Knowledge is power.
