How much time students should devote in extra curricular activities?

In schools and colleges, students participate in extra curricular activities over and above their academic pursuits. For taking part in extra curricular activities, students have to spare some significant time. This to some extent affect the academic performance of the students especially those who have interest in extra curricular activities.
How can a student make a balance between the time one spends in studies versus the time one spends in extra curricular activities? Today there is a tough competition for making a career and large number of students are appearing for various competitive examinations competing for limited seats. In such a situation it is imperative that students have to give more time for studies rather than for extra curricular activities.

I feel, there is no fixed formula for this. It all depends on the individual and his abilities and interests. It is a known fact that no two human beings are not equal. Not only in physical appearance but also in their brain power. So the planning should vary from person to person. A student may finish his studies in 3 or 4 hours but another student may have to spend 8 to 9 hours. All should give importance to education and there is no second thought about it. But a person who has expertise in a particular game or sport, should not leave that. He should allow sufficient time to improve his skill in the game which may ensure a safe career in that sports area. Daily an hour can be good enough for an average. But a student not having an interest in extra circular activities should not be forced to develop skills in that area as he will be losing time without any outcome.

How much time should a student spend in extra-curricular activities? It depends on various factors. Generally, as a thumb rule, a student spends less time or no time in extra-curricular activities on the eve of examination. But he/she resumes these activities after the examination.

However, this is not so simple in all cases. One of my next generation relatives is a computer geek. Even before the examination, he used to spend a considerable time to develop programmes and learning languages during his teens. This extra-curriclar activity of this young boy has helped him a lot later and he is now earning handsome salary in computer industry and is almost a globe-trotter by virtue of his work.

I was curious to know the feedback of members in this regard because in my own case I spent no time in extra curricular activities as I was always short of time even for my studies.
