    Will mix and match types of courses and syllabi help

    The revolutionary feature envisaged in NEP 2020 is "no hard separations between arts and sciences, between curricular and extra-curricular activities, between vocational and academic streams, etc. in order to eliminate harmful hierarchies among, and silos between different areas of learning. · multidisciplinary and a holistic education across the sciences, social sciences, arts, humanities, and sports for a multidisciplinary world in order to ensure the unity and integrity of all knowledge;"

    This is clearly indicating to "flexibility so that learners have the ability to choose their learning trajectories and programmes, and thereby choose their own paths in life according to their talents and interests;" The course and subject menu will be seamless.

    This is going to bring drastic changes in course and combinations. Till now the subjects were pre-decided as per the stream the student takes like arts stream, Science stream, or Humanities. But now all this will change. A Student can choose Physics as one subject and fashion or music as another subject for his graduation course. This was totally unimaginable earlier. A student can have Mathematics, Tamil Language, and Music as combination subjects for his course.

    Though, we can see the actual ground effects only after a couple of years of implementation what is your take on an imaginative and critical evaluation of this matter?

    This is a point in favor of the student, Fixed combinations are causing some inconvenience to the student. If I want to study chemistry, I have to study mathematics also. As I have no interest in mathematics I have to stop selecting chemistry also. Like this the fixed combinations are making students more worried. But if there is choice to change the combinations students can select all the subjects which are interesting for them. This is a big change which is going to help the student. Even though we may not understand the impact immediately, in wrong run we will understand the benefits.

    If a combination in favour of the choice the student is allowed to be continued, it will create a chance for their appropriate growth in his line of studies.
    Introduction of NEP 2020 scheme is being designed to promote the inherent talent of the student and since the combination
    is formed with the careful selection of the choices, there is every possibility of showing his best performance.
    Hope in the upcoming time, this scheme will be more popular among the student group. A real evaluation of the benefits of such a scheme would be felt in a couple of years.

    In my view it will be good and in favour of the students in the long run. First thing is there is no compulsion of taking pre decided streams or combinations. Some students who were earlier forced to take Physics, Chemistry, and Maths as a pre decided option but were having interest in only Maths and did also like to pursue some other passions out of the humanity group, say music and drama, can now choose like that. This freedom means a lot for the students and moreover in future they will not be having any complaint that they were having interest in such and such subjects but were forced to take up such and such subjects. It is obvious that students will care better in their passion or interest areas.
    Knowledge is power.

    Now that the contest is over, let me submit my views here. To be frank, I am, at the outset, doubtful about the practical aspect of this proposal. Is is viable? How will it be implememted? How will the classes be arranged? What are the career prospects for such students? Do we have opportunities for such mix and match pass outs? What will be the modus-operandi to accomodate such students in jobs requiring specialisations? I don't think the proposal has been made after a proper analysis or detailed study of facts.

    I suggest a reduction in the syllabus up to Class X by excluding all that is not basically required. For example, students are made to study Algebra and Geometry as part of their maths paper but how much is it required in daily life? It can be started once the students opt for their specialisations as they go to the Plus 2 area and above. Similarly there are so many topics in different subjects that does not actually help a student. They study it for the sake of it and then simply forget about those. So, what is the use? Let it be just basics and primary knowledge upto Class X.
