Reforms needed in academic year, daily school /college hours

Most of us who had completed schooling and college a couple of decades ago would have been familiar with the school /college hours of 10 to 5 or 9 to 4. Moreover, they used to be Monday to Friday routine(Very rarely Saturdays included)
But even those days at least in some metros the school meetings were beginning early and ending early or they were as per different shifts like morning shift and afternoon shifts. Now this shift system is seen in many places including small towns.
All these had their pros and cons. It affected the students and parents in different ways. Even the vacation period also had different impacts and reactions among students and parents. There were issues with traffic arrangements, traffic jams, crowded public transport, etc. Individual families have their problems and benefits.
Now that a lot of facilities and conveniences are available and also many disruptive changes in the whole education system and sector, can there not be some drastic realistic changes in daily school hours, duration of the academic year, vacation, etc.?

As the student population is in creasing, to accommodate more students, shift system might have been introduced in many schools, I feel. When I was in high school, in the morning shift the boy's school was functioning and in the after noon section the same facility was functioning as girl's school.
But now it is a different story. Morning times, IIT coaching classes and then regular classes and in the evening other extra circular activity coaching classes. Overall, the student is getting overburdened. The system of separate entrance tests should be abolished and seats in higher degrees are to be allotted based on the marks obtained in the qualifying examination. Then some relief may come to the student and burden will come down. This is very much needed I feel. Some recreation time is needed for the students in between studies. Otherwise it will monotonous for them

This is an interesting thread raised by the author. I also agree that as we have got a huge population in our country and there are a large number of students studying in various educational institutions, it is imperative that there should be some system of making certain hours a day and academic year durations in such a way that it becomes convenient for the students as well as society.
One thing I strongly advocate is that all the institutions should not have exactly the same schedule. There should be some overlap in between and there should not be annual holidays falling on the same dates. If all the institutions observe the same schedule then during the holidays there will be big load on the infrastructure and tourism industry and many people will suffer by not getting reservations and end up paying hefty amounts for air fares and staying in hotele and many such other inconveniences and hardships.
It is true that due to certain technical reasons we cannot keep the schedules too much different from each other but a reasonable overlap will do the trick.

    Knowledge is power.
