Solving puzzles and participating in quiz programmes will improve the IQ of a student

In our schools and colleges, quiz programmes will be organised and teachers will encourage students to participate in these activities. Similarly, many puzzles are also being given to students. Similarly, we will find many puzzles in various magazines and newspapers. Solving these puzzles will also help the students to get afresh on the general knowledge front. These activities will improve the chances for the student to fare well in competitive and entrance tests that are being conducted for higher studies as well as for a placement.

I feel all the parents and teachers should encourage their children and students to attempt such puzzles and participate in such quiz programmes. That will enhance their IQ. I like to know the ideas of other members on this.

Solving puzzles and taking part in quiz programs is a great way of learning and acquiring analytical skills. This is especially important in the student life when the children are having a fresh mind and are very curious to know about everything happening around them.
It is very common in schools to have periodical quiz and contest programs for the benefit of the students. Some students feel shy and they do not take part in such contests unless they are forced or insisted upon. Parents and teachers have to take care of such students and encourage and motivate them to take part in these important activities.
The students who are regularly taking part in such activities are immensely benefited in the later phase of their lives when they have to compete and appear in so many tough competitive examinations.
In general these activities are beneficial to everyone including the students.

    Knowledge is power.

In our school days, the teachers always encouraged us to participate in the quizzes wherever they get such opportunities for the participation. In those days, there was a leading English Newspaper named the Statesman which was very popular in the circles of the readers for the coverage of the different topics apart from the latest news relating to both internal issues and the prominent news of the abroad.
But I was very much fascinated with the puzzles appearing in the last page of the daily to solve the quizzes for the sake of the fun and more I solved such series, more I got pleasure. This helped me a lot in the the acquaintance of the new words..

Participating in quiz programmes help participants to collect more information about classical GK and current affairs.

Participating in crossword puzzles improves the vocabulary.

Then how do quiz and crossword puzzle help in developing a person's Intelligence Quotient ?

    (b) Have no fear of perfection - you'll never reach it. ---------- Salvador Dali

    Partha Sir,
When a student starts thinking his brain will become more active and in turn his IQ will increase. This is my opinion. If it is wrong, you can correct me.

Intelligence Quotient (IQ) is defined as a a number representing a person's reasoning ability (measured using problem-solving tests) as compared to the statistical norm or average for their age, taken as 100.

From the above definition of IQ, I can't understand how improvement in vocabularies or collecting general information on current affairs/classical GK help developing the reasoning ability of a person, as stated in the definition of IQ.

    (b) Have no fear of perfection - you'll never reach it. ---------- Salvador Dali

The author is right. This is an external activity for not only children but also for anyone. I used to carry Tamil weekly/monthly magazines with me while travelling on office duties. In such books there was some crossword puzzles and I was having much interest in filling them also. Once I was travelling from Vizag to Chennai by Coromandel express with my branch service Manager. When I start filling puzzles in a book the manager who was travelling with me mocked why I did such as a child. I did not respond to him but with smile. When I just went to toilet by keeping the filling the crossword puzzle book in my seat, he took that and as he felt some interest he asked me when I returned, whether he could fill the remaining. Then onwards he started to buy similar books and start the filling of crossword puzzles.
Presently I used to ask my brother's 14 years old daughter to find the differences in pictures etc., appeared in Tamil magazines and newspapers.
