Debate competition is necessary to sharpen argumentation skills

Every school must conduct debate competitions in the school to sharpen the argumentation skills of the students. Sometimes we observe that people take it personally and act accordingly. This behaviour can be minimised by arranging debate competitions in the schools. Students would be able to develop communication skills, argumentation skills, thinking skills, etc if they actively participate in debate competitions.

That is correct. Debate competitions will be helpful to students to overcome stage fear. When they start talking before a group of people, initially they may have some fear of talking but once they get into the flow, they may be normal. So repeatedly participating in these debate competitions will improve their oratory skills. Their understanding of the subject on which they are taking will improve. When the audience interacts and asks questions, the students can learn how to answer and how to justify their statements will also happen.
In addition to debate competitions, Group discussions will also help a lot in improving their argument abilities. How to make our point clear and how to justify our stand will be understood when a student participates in such group discussions and debate programmes. If students start participating in such competitions during their school studies by the time they grow up they will become very good orators. In the present-day context, communication skills are very important. These skills also will improve if students participate in such programmes.

Whatever the jobs we are doing, communication- skills plays an important role and without this, we cannot be a successful managers or the orators. Keeping this parameter in mind, the best schools in our localities try to improve the oratory skill of the pupils through the debates which is organised by the school authorities time to time to make them well versed in the lines of communications.
The topics might range from the sacrifices of lives of Bhagat Singh or the role of Mahatma Gandhi in getting our independence from the Britishers. The faculties encourage the students to go ahead with the touch of their closeness. Such a motivational approach works wonders in arousing the inner talents of the students. They would show their bests in the topic assigned to them for the discussions.
There might be a series of questions from the group of the students and presenting the answers of such queries satisfactorily would further boost their confidence levels.
The earlier the authorities initiate such programs, the better would be the results of such programs. Such series of debate competitions will ultimately result in the improved performance of the students in the areas of their communication- skills.

Debate is a very useful activity for the students because it sharpens the oratory power as well as enhances the communication skills. It is seen that the students who are good in debate during their school or college period generally become very good speakers and whenever they get an opportunity to present something to an audience they perform very nicely.
In most of the educational institutions debate is one of the common activities in which many students undertake part and perform. Debate not only enhances the communication skills of a student but through that the student acquires a lot of knowledge and points for discussing the issue with others. In that process a student learns all the points which are in favour or against of that particular topic and his knowledge and analytical skills are enhanced significantly.
Those educational institutions which are not giving debate as an important activity status in their colleges must think about this and must include it in the extra curricular activities.

    Knowledge is power.

We should never consider the debate competition as argumentation as this is only a vent for exchanging opinions. Moreover the debate or group discussions are encouraging the removal of fear in talking with others in open talking. The selection or right or wrong all are on the other side but the hesitation, sluggishness in the aspirants will get removed if participating. I have seen even in group discussions fixed in employment selection some candidates are sitting idle or just watching others without expressing their views.
Even in nowadays the group studying among students also got slightly vanished in many places. Moreover this prevails highly increased only when the mobile usage started. Many students are sitting in their private room with mobiles and parents also letting them free by thinking they are allowing freedom to their children. This also become a reason for them to sit behind in the group discussions/debates.

I completely agree with the thread raised here debates should be part of education and curriculam. Often we see students just so used to rote learning that they don't realise what they have studied or are studying but if things are made part of the debate they will be left with no choice but to analyse the topic in a better way rather than just memorising.
During the debate, their analytical skills, communication and logical skills will get a boost that will stay with them lifelong.

The purpose of a debate must be clear to the students to help them develop analytical and reasoning skills. Debate is not an unnecessary argument which leads to nowhere but a meaningful discussion where opposing views are put forth with reasons. Nowadays, participation in debates is more necessary for students so that they do not engage in verbal duel with others which we regularly experience during talk shows/debates shown in media. There we see the participants arguing without any conclusive logic but to prove who is more correct. By viewing (shall I say enjoying) such programs students may form a different idea of debate and may equate it with quarrel or unnecessary argument which is quite wrong. One must have a good idea of the topic of debate and one should provide solid logic behind the argument. It should not be an argument for the sake of an argument only and that must be made clear to the students. For this very reason, students should be encouraged to participate in moderated debates.

During my college days I was a member of the debating club. That helped me a lot to refine and sharpen my analytical
thoughts and see a matter from various angles and perspectives unbiased and then to form my opinion. It also gave me the openness to accept the other side view if it is true, factful and convincing and to avoid rigidness in stand.

However in present day if our students and youth take to debates after following the TV channel debates, then I am afraid, the debates will be nothing but high voltage biased verbose and lead to animosity and hatemongering. There will not be any positive outcome and results will be as pre-decided and pre-scripted.

But I am happy that in Tamil Nadu ( except the politically coloured debates) there are still some interesting academic and cultural debates happening. debates. Many of them are enriching in language and content and some very good intellectual entertainment too.
