Interesting: A new gecko found at Rajapalayam, Tamil Nadu

I, like most of the members of ISC, read different types of news from various sources. Among the cacophony of information, we find some information very interesting. Very recently, in the fog of wars going on between Israel-Hamas, Russia-Ukraine and Armenia-Azerbaijan, a completely different news has attracted my attention. I am sharing this interesting information with the members of ISC.

Very recently, a new species of gecko has been found in the Western Ghats near Rajapalayam in Tamil Nadu. The scientific name of this new species is Cnemaspis rashidi . This new gecko has been found at an altitude of 1245 metres at Kottamalai estate near Rajapalayam. It is also called 'Rashidi's dwarf gecko' as it is the smallest among the genus. More interestingly, this gecko is endemic to the Western Ghats.

This gecko displays a combination of beautiful colour pattern of yellow, white and black on its back, making it gorgeous and beautiful.

A research paper has been published in the Asian Journal of Conservation Biology about the discovery of these species. A Senior scientist Amit Sayyed of Wildlife Protection and Research Society, Maharashtra, has named the previously undocumented species as Cnemaspis rashidi. He named it after his father, Prof. Rashid Sayyed. As per him, so far93 Species of Gecko have been mentioned in the literature and the new addition is the 94th species. The newly documented species is the smallest among these 94 and is about 2 inches long. He added that the gecko's eyes are of a mesmerizing shade of deep brown, giving it an almost ethereal quality.
The team of Scientists from Bombay Natural History Society, Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment, Bengaluru, Help Earth, Assam, and InSearch Environmental Solutions, Pune, also. These scientists worked with Amit Sayyed on this project.
It is the duty of human beings to protect nature and its conservation is very important so that many such species can survive in this environment.

There is abundance of various types of flora and fauna on the mother Earth and from time to time scientists and explorers have found new species. Finding a new species of gecko in the western ghats is an interesting discovery and it also indicates that in the deep of the forests, ghats, and remote areas there are possibilities of finding more such new species belonging to different different classes of animals.
During the environmental and educational excursions or tours students can also look for such things and undertake the natural studies in these subjects as a project.
