Nutritious mid day meals in the schools in Maharashtra

Maharashtra state Govt has taken a decision to provide enriched and nutritious mid day meals to the students in the schools. This is being carried out in line with the directives and suggestions made in the 'Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman Yojana' of the central government.
Presently the students are being served with khichdi or such items during the mid day meal. But now they will be getting eggs or banana depending on whether a student likes to take eggs or not. The eggs will be served with biryani or pulao. It is also proposed to add soya chunks to the mid day meal given to the students to take care of their protein needs.
I think it is a good step taken by the Maharashtra state government and other states might also be thinking in the same direction.

Definitely, it is an encouraging step taken up by the Maharashtra Government keeping in view of the deficiency of the nutrition- needs of the school going children. Other than public schools where the children of the affluent classes are receiving education getting enough care by their parents with the supplementation of wholesome meals provided to them from their families but so is not the case with others receiving education in the state government schools where the majority of students hail from poor families. The food provided to such children lack adequate nutrients.
The steps taken up the state government would help the students to get diets full of nutrients and protein to nourish their bodies in both the terms- physically and mentally. The other state government should come up with such steps.

Already such meals are being provided in some states. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states already started providing nutritious food to the students of primary school in government schools. It is the duty of the Head Master of the school to see that all the students will get quality food as directed by the government. In Andhra Pradesh during COVID time, food items without cooking were supplied to students in their houses.
The governments of other states may also follow suit. It is a good scheme. This scheme will attract students from lower-income groups. Another important issue is the attendance. Children will not go absent as they will get meals only when they attend school.
The meal arrangement is outsourced by some schools in the Telugu States. In some places, there is a misuse of this scheme. The contractor will arrange separate food for teachers which will be very tasty and will offer separate food for students.

Mid-day meals for students are not a new idea. It was started in Kerala long back. The scheme is actually funded by both, the center and the state. I think it would be appropriate to point out here that the mid-day meals in Kerala had to be discontinued for some time due to lack of funds and reports say that the center has not been giving its share. Launching this program in Maharashtra now without sharing the burden in other states is something that needs to be given a thought to.

Mid-day meal was first introduced in Tamil Nadu by an outstanding politician K. Kamraj, who was incidentally almost an illiterate. Although he received the Bharat Ratna posthumously, he did not get adequate respect in his own party.

The mid day meals was introduced by our Tamil Nadu ex chief Minister K. Kamaraj and continued by M. G. Ramachandran, then Chief Minister and present Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The main motto was to cater the poor students but presently many children even with some standard are coming to the school without breakfast or correct mid day meals. Such students are not coming for availing Mid day meals by seeing prestige but starving silently. Some teachers observed this in their classes and silently offer some foods to such students. This mainly because of the parents with less care due to their work schedule. In some houses the food given to children also not with nominal standard as the head of the family suffers diabetic etc., the mothers with less care feed the children also and in some houses the children themselves not eating food properly by seeing their parents who were diabetic. The alert in them may be good but the needy strength for them is lack in such cases.
