Do present day college students use campus libraries effectively?

During our college days, the college library was an important place. For the studious types, it was a 'must place' and they used all the extra spare hours spent in the library reading room, referring to relevant books and taking notes.

I have gained a lot from the college library and used to take books home from the library. The books were related to the college syllabus as well as other fiction and non-fiction general books.
Even those who were not interested in books also visited and spent time in the college library just to be around their boyfriends or girlfriends.

It is my view that present-day students generally do not use college libraries as there are many other ways like the internet, capsule books, online tips and teachings, etc. What is your view?

The author has narrated his experiences of the college days and this sort of scene was not visible only in his college but could be extended to the other colleges as well. I was a student of the St. Xavier's College Ranchi and during my time, the library remained operative from 9 am to 7 pm to take care of the requirements of the books by way of borrowing the same. Such books ranged from the literatures to sciences. The library contained voluminous stocks of the books in the different subjects apart from magazines and periodicals of the English, Hindi and Bengali.
We did not feel to purchase the books from the market because the notes provided by the professors and grant of books up to six numbers for a period of two months helped us a lot for the better preparations of the examinations.
The old system has become obsolete these days as I have heard from the boys of this college. They resort to other help books available in the market apart from taking help from the Internets for their studies.

Now digital libraries are taking over on the regular libraries. So people going to the library and sitting there is coming down. There are many search engines in which we can find information related to the subject we want. So all are trying to use this facility and not spending time reading books in a library.
During my PhD thesis writing period, I spent almost 2 or 3 months surveying the available literature. All the related papers are to be gathered and read. Then the useful information is to be noted down and the same is to be referred to in my thesis giving the reference. But now scholars are using digital libraries and completing the survey very quickly and mentioning them in their thesis.
I have seen in many universities students going to the libraries and sitting before the computer there and conducting their search. So I think in educational institutes digital libraries are more in demand.

This is an interesting discussion. During my college/university days, good students used to go to the library for studying or for borrowing reference books. Bad students generally avoided library. Some back-benchers like Partha K. used to visit libraries occasionally for some other purpose (which has also been mentioned by Venkiteswaran Sir).

So far as digital libraries are concerned, I would request knowledgeable members to indicate some free and good digital libraries, which are frequented by college/university level Indian students.

There was a library near to my house at Madurai and I used to go there for reading magazines and newspapers. One day during my graduation I noticed a book on Accountancy by Sarkar. With some curiosity I approached the librarian whether I could get the book for reference. He by seeing my interest, I permit me with his personal risk, to take the book to my house for a week's time. I never forget Mr. Mahalingam, that librarian.
On one side we can say 'yes'. Whenever I visit Connemara Public Library at Chennai, I am seeding many students are sitting in the lawn and studying in groups. Inside the libraries also I am seeing many students taking notes by sitting in the reference section. Since I am a member of that Library, I used the library well during my M Com studying. I took many valuable books for reference to my home and it is very difficult to buy all books by anyone and it is to reiterate that the libraries are highly useful to any student.

In earlier times, college library was the only place where we could get reference material for books or other reading materials for our use not only for our studies but for our general awareness also.
I still remember we had to wait for our turn in the library to get the books returned or issued whatever the case might be as there used to be so many students standing around the librarian most of the times.
Today the situation is drastically changed and there is a paradigm shift from physical library to online resources. Students are depending more on online materials or ebooks and things like that rather than going to a library and getting the books issued.
Definitely, this shift is caused by the scientific and technological advancements through which we have reached this digital age.
