Do educational institutions give stress on soft skills?

During my school, college, or university days, I never heard this term. After a long long time, while studying MBA, I came to know about this term. One of our professors used to give tremendous importance to soft skills. He used to tell us that to survive the cut-throat competition in the corporate sector and also in senior positions in Government offices, soft skills are more important than hard skills.

Soft skills include any skill which can be classified as a personality trait or habit. Inter-personal skills and communication skills are more specific categories of these, which many employers look for in job candidates.

Broad types of soft skills include:
    (a) Communication
    (b) Problem-solving
    (c) Creativity
    (de) Adaptability, and
    (e) Work ethic

Over the years, I have understood the importance of soft skills. However, I am astonished to find that in India's educational institutions, the least importance is given to acquiring soft skills. Hard skills are of paramount importance. But, as I have already stated, after a certain level, soft skills become more important than hard skills.

Why don't educational institutions put stress on soft skills? What are the ways to enable students to acquire soft skills at an early age?

The author is very correct. Soft skills play a very important role in the progress of a person in his profession. How you communicate with others, how much importance you give to solving the problems on your work front etc, play a very important role in our career.
But these skills are not taught in our schools or colleges. It is not a part of the curriculum in the school or college. During the '70s and '80s, we never heard the word soft skills. But in those days in educational institutions, some competitions were being conducted. These competitions are used to give chances to the students to improve their communication skills.
Some organisations recruit people and give them induction training to such people and help them improve their soft skills. It will be very good if these skills are taught in school and college education. That will give an edge to the students in procuring a good job.

Yes, I agree with the author. Soft skills are essential for a student and every school or institution must try to develop these soft skills in the students. Without these soft skills, students would not be able to compete in the age of competition.

The New Education Policy (NEP) will certainly help in developing these soft skill in the students.

    Honesty is the best policy.
