Advantages of entering into Medicine being a non biology student.

Now the medical admission is based on NEET score and recent modification under discussion is even a non bio student can take NEET. I feel this has advantage as the student clearly undergoes without any confusion at one place that is coaching centre or self study.

I have one case study not in medical admission but in admission to Bio technology when I recommended the candidate to take admission even without biology in higher secondary. But afterwards when I look into the syllabus it is full of biology and asked the candidate but surprisingly got the answer 'no problem I am interested in biology'. Having said that candidate finished M.Tech and pursuing research too.

So I feel without any hardship in studying the subject those who are interested can take NEET as they would have done till 10th.

Please come up with your opinion for a fair discussion so as to help the students in their thought process.

I don't foresee any problem for non-biology students to do well in the Medical sciences field. Biology is a common subject for all students up to the 10th class for all the students. Coping with the biology part after joining medicinal sciences is not a very difficult issue if the student has a real interest in that subject.
When I did my intermediate, all mathematics and sciences students used to study a subject called General Biology and all biology students used to study general mathematics. But arts and humanities stream students may not be able to cope with the subjects I feel. The actual performance of the student in the course if he/ she qualifies in NEET, will depend on the interest a student is having and the hard work he. she is going to put in his/ her studies. During the first year of the studies in Medicine if the candidate spends a little more time in understanding the fundamentals, doing well in studies will never be a problem.

I completely disagree with the proposition. A non-medical student may study biotechnology but can never be successful in the medical field (i.e., studying MBBS/MD/MS). If a student doesn't know basic mathematical operations, can he/she obtain a Master's degree in Mathematics?

Similarly, if a student doesn't know anything about cells, different systems, coordination among the systems, evolution, etc. how can he/she understand the defects/dysfunctioning of human body systems and correct such defects?

I outrightly reject this proposition. Further, we must understand very clearly that Bio-technology and Medical are not at all same/similar.

Entering the field of Medicine primarily requires more patience, sociability, knowledge of our human structure (still a long way to go to have a complete knowledge of our human body), and finally passion for the profession. The students study biology as a science up to 10th grade and they need to choose the stream in the 11th standard to be prioritized. However, they have the knowledge of biological science to some extent. My grandkid is in 6th grade (ICSE) and is having biology as a separate subject to study different systems of human anatomy and is wondering how our human body is. The 2-year break won't pose any difference for the young minds If they are interested. This would be an advantage indeed even though they were from a non-biology stream.

What the author has described in the post seems to be quite interesting and the discussions are going on to provide opportunities to appear for NEET for the nonbiological students. Though such a journey for the students might not be easy either. I would not say that nonbiological students cannot achieve the success in the NEET but it would be really an herculean task definitely.
Regarding the concepts of Physics and Chemistry, students of both the streams can have clarity of the concepts to the same level but the same point might not be applicable to Biology.
There are numerous topics such as the genetics, human anatomy, mutation of cells etc which might be considered a time consuming process for the newbie's. To understand the mechanisms of the different genes and other biological factors, the initial phase of the nonbiological students might be a difficult task unless they get a good mentor.
To my opinion the success rate of the non biological students interested to clear the NEET is not the cup of tea for them. The real observation can be established once the nonbiological students attempt the NEET exams once they get a signal for the same.

In our educational system at many places there are some restrictions on the students for selecting a particular course if they did not have it during there earlier classes. To some extent this was a good concept because it ascertained that the student must have knowledge in that particular area and one then learns the advanced concepts also in the same discipline.
Today the things are drastically changed, the new education policy is on the anvil and there are many changes being brought in the educational system.
The idea of allowing students to choose a stream where there is no exposure, India seems to be a good job and profession but the fact is that if a student is hard working and sincere then he can manage the new stream.

    Knowledge is power.

Thanks members. @Partha, if you see the syllabus of BT of AU, it is purely biology and I hope those who want to turn to medical after 10+2 this is good chance to prepare biology for two years in coaching centres /self study without dual preparation for NEET and final exam. Of course they have to do for phy/chem dual preparation but they are reduced with 50 percent stress. Even they can catch the bus since they missed while choosing 10+2 for any reason that they might have chosen wrongly or school would have denied the option. It is a chance one can use it.
