    Difference between trial and trail

The same five alphabets. Both words start with the same letter. Both words end with the same letter. The meaning varies a lot. We see some words like this in the English language.

A good example of such words is trial and trail.

The word "trial" refers to the examination of the evidence in a court of law to determine guilt or innocence. The same word can be used to test or experiment to assess the effectiveness. When we do some research we will conduct many trials to know the facts and figures.

On the other hand, "trail" refers to a path or track. A route for travel over land, especially a narrow, unpaved pathway for use by hikers, horseback riders, etc. is known as the trail.

Members may come across many such words. They can mention such words as a response to this thread.

That is an interesting pair of words. Their first letter is same and also their last letter is same. There must be many words like that and we can search them in the dictionary or may be in a thesaurus.
Anyway, I was trying to think of such a word but was not successful as I was not able to reproduce a word like that from my memory. Then I took help of a website where many such words are mentioned in some other context and there I found some familiar ones.
One of them is Sang and Snag. Sang is the past tense of sing while snag means a trouble or problem in a machine.

There are many such words. As for example (which readily come to my mind):

    1. Fire-----------Five-------Fine-------------Face----------Fate------------Fame-----------Fare

    2. Owl---------Oil

    3. Care---------------Came---------------Cane------------------Case----------Cave------Cage

There are thousands of words in English which satisfy the condition mentioned in thiis post.

    (a) Those who have forgotten Noakhali, how can they protest Sandeshkhali?
    (b) Have no fear of perfection - you'll never reach it. ---------- Salvador Dali

The example given by me is about words which are having same alphabet. What Sarojah mentioned in her post is exactly what I have mentioned in my post.

This post talks about the anagram. But the additional condition that the first letter of the words should be same and another condition that last letter of the words should also be same make the search limited and there would not be a large number of such words.
In same and seam, the last letters do not match. However, from anagram point of view it is all right.
Dr Rao may like to offer his comments on that please.

In my post, I have not used the word Anagram anywhere. As far as my knowledge goes, An Anagram is a tool where the letters in a word are rearranged and the word so farmed will have a different meaning. The example given by Saroja is a good example of Anagram and at the same time, the example given by me may also be considered an Anagram.

That is correct. While making an anagram one has to use all the letters of the word and rearrange them to form another meaningful word. The new words can start and end with any letter present in the original word.

The basic difference between trail and trial is that - Trial refers to trying something (apparel/ court proceedings etc.). However, trail refers to lagging or following the footprints.

Yes I agree that OP is not talked about anagram but i wantd to clarify to @Partha that he has taken one part that is first letter and last letter same and omitted same alphabets. The example given in op and in my response is one among the anogram rearranged with such set of same alphabets.

English can be tricky with words that look alike but mean different things. 'Trial' is about testing or a legal process, while 'trail' is a path or track. It's a common source of confusion, but context usually helps figure it out.
