What are your views on heavy homework to primary school students?

I have been observing these days, that primary school students are also been assigned a lot of homework. After coming from school, these students have to sit for a long time to complete that work. It is a punishment not only to the students but also to one of their parents. If any student fails to complete that work, teachers will punish the student and that will harm the student.

In my opinion, it is better to see that the student will complete his/ her work in the school itself and writing work should be as minimal as possible at least up to 3rd or 4th class. Otherwise, these kids will not show interest in going to school and that may affect their performance in higher classes also.

I like to know the views of other members on this issue.

What the author has indicated in his post is the correct picture of the students of the primary schools. They get a lot of home work from the teachers of the different subjects and the assignments allotted to them needs to be completed at any cost so that they are not punished for their defaults. Since such tasks are done half heartedly, usefulness of such tasks is a question mark and the fact is the otherwise.
Some of the students try to complete the assignments in the school hours itself during the class hours but in that case, they would be deprived of the regular lessons which are being taught by the subject teachers and apart from that they might be rebuked for such an indulgence from their teachers. The only options for them is to complete their homework in home at the cost of curtailing their regular hours of studies.
The school authorities should seriously review the justifiability's of such tasks so that the students are not disturbed unnecessarily by their teachers. The teachers should ensure that the students get ample opportunity for the revision of the lessons already taught.

In my view teachers should give quality homework to the children rather than giving a voluminous homework. There is no point in giving a large amount of homework because children will not be able to complete that and simply waste time on those repetitions.

This is a very interesting topic.

In this connection, I would like to submit a few points.

My daughter is nowadays giving online private tuition to a young Indian boy based in New Zealand. My daughter and myself are pleasantly surprised that there is no system of homework in the schools of New Zealand. And the country is rzanked very high in respect of standard of education.

However, the parents of that boy are very bothered. They feel it is not good that the teachers of their son don't give any homework. I have also noted the same in other cases also. Most Indian parents want that the school teachers give huge homework to the students so that they remain engaged 24x7.

But, huge amount of homework doesn't actually help students. Most of the times, small children start hating study/education. They don't feel interested to learn new things due to such useless homework.

In my opinion, homework is necessary for students but it should be done in such a manner that students enjoy it and does not bother them. It is also possible that students can solve the homework in school with the teacher's guidance.

The homework is given to evaluate the lesson plan and if the student completes it in the school, then it will show you the complete picture. It is also possible that the school arranges one or two periods and an extra teacher to complete homework in the school.

    Honesty is the best policy.

I agree with Hakimuddin. I am not aginst giving home work. But it should not be very heavy and students should not feel it as a burden to them. Getting the work done in the school itself during work classes is a good idea.

Normally home works are given to students at any level with an intention of making them to sit in the house for studying compulsorily at least for half to one hour. This may be on the other hand to make them masticating the days study in the school. But there is some limit for them and the home works should be in the way not to make the students to get bored on study which may drag them to frustration.
One government school teacher told me once, to ask the children especially small children to make them to sit for writing in the house though there is no home work given by class teachers as there should be a practice in them for studying and writing. She further told me to give that writing work with friendly approach and not to force them or ordering them.

Students can be given suitable homework which will enable them to have a review and recall of what was taught that day. It should be of quantity and easy to attempt and complete so that the child is enthused to attempt and complete it rather than shun it. It also may help the students and parents to sit together and interact for benefit.

In such cases, interested parents can supplement the information or lesson learned with some suitable additional and interesting info or anecdotes or explanations that will cement the lesson learned.

The curriculum in the initial years of schooling is very general and general-centric. The assignments are given to children to keep them busy at home and to motivate them to revise the topic done in the class.

The change is required to be made in the curriculum itself and change the model to a teaching-learning system. In my view, the learners should be asked to record the correlation of their concerned topic to some real-life situation. For example if they are learning a topic of evaporation, they must observe the same in their day-to-day life. And then repeat the definition in their mind. This pattern needs to be developed in all the subjects, and the observation needs to be discussed in the class during that session not just after that class.
Emphasis is required to improve their learning process into understaffing and application. For this teachers need to be trained. Less paperwork will also lead to more time for interaction and brainstorming sessions.

    Good Luck and take care
