Do marks scored during studies matter in real life later?

Our educational system is such that students undergo so much stress and some schools even have cancelled some of the festival holidays too. So marks and pressurizing students is so important than festivals. Even after finishing the portions, while going on with revisions for the pre-board examination also attendance is compulsory. As a common man, think about the teachers working with no breaks whatsoever. These are all done for the schools to brag about their result, so that people will swarm them for admission.

The teachers and parents are helpless with this system. Students are so nervous even for pre boards.

Do the marks obtained during studies matter in real life later? Please come up with your opinions.

I think the marks obtained in examinations do not matter much these days. The admissions to higher studies are conducted based on the rank obtained in the entrance test. Once a student acquires the minimum qualifying mark he can apply for the entrance test. So obtaining the minimum qualifying mark is important.
Even for getting a placement more than a student's marks, his/ her performance in the written test and Interview contributes. Once a student completes his/her studies and joins a job, his/ her marks will not matter for promotions and career progress. His performance and getting updated with the skills required for performing the job properly matters more than what marks the student obtained in his qualifying examination.
The marks I obtained in my PG helped me in getting a fellowship for doing my PhD. After that, nobody asked me about my marks in my PG. Generally, it will be the same for all. These days even for sanctioning a fellowship or scholarship one has to attend a written test. So acquiring knowledge is more important than getting more marks without understanding the basics.

It is really a valuable question raised by the author. The students feel the importance of their continuous learning in their academic sessions as suggested by the mentors/ teachers. Their main objective is to excel in their final exams.
Once they achieve their goals on the basis of excellent marks followed by the interviews, they get the jobs according to their abilities. To that extent their performances in the exams are valuable. In the later stages, their lives would be governed by the environments where they are putting their services apart from the family atmospheres.

Marks and scores obtained by the students in various examinations are very important for getting admissions in the next stages as well as for getting a job and making a career. That is the basic understanding under which the parents, their children, and the educational systems are moving ahead.
Coming to the real life situations, I don't think that the marks obtained by the students in schools or collages are directly proportional to the success in actual life of a person. In a real life situation what counts more is common sense, presence of mind, clarity of thinking, and skill sets possessed by the person.
Those who have scored high in their education and also possess the above mentioned qualities can definitely rise in the lives and make a successful career.

    Knowledge is power.

In my view, marks is not the entire thing that determines the life of a student. However there are certain things that we get while getting goods marks in academic exams. For instance, if we are a graduating student, a good marks in academic will results in getting placed in reputed companies. However to be a good person in real life, marks is not the entire thing. One need to know what the life is, for that he need experience of life. Nowadays most of the students just byhearting the contents and writing the exam. They don't know what they are studying. On the other hand, there are some students who have some critical thinking ability, but they are not interested to just write the exam and pass. If we just look in to the life of some successful peoples like sachin, rajanikath, etc., they don't have much to tell about there academic, but have good life experience and critical thinking ability.

Scoring good marks in examinations is, no doubt, very important when you are a student. It is an indication of how much you have grasped from what you have studied and works as a guide and motivator for you to improve yourself and to climb the ladder. But marks become insignificant when you take the next turn in your life to build a career. Your credentials as a student will surely be evaluated when you apply for a job but once you are in, it is how you perform that will matter. You may be a rank holder but if you do not do well in your job, your further prospects will be hampered. So, though marks are important when you are studying, it doesn't, I feel, actually matter in your later life.

Once we are settled in a career the marks obtained in our qualifying examinations do not matter much. But they will always be a self-esteem and self-satisfaction matter for us. If we have scored good marks in those exams, then once in a while the same can be quoted as a motivating point to our children and family.

Marks and grades come of help when we go for a new course of study (if such an eligibility criteria is there) and probably for getting into a career. But it will always remain there as a private reminder to us of our good/bad efforts during our student days and even a prompt for more hard work and focus for excelling or keeping the same excellence.

The response of Venkiteswaran reminds the report card of students with low marks always shown as comedy sequence in stories and movies and now I am thinking why nobody depicts instances of students with higher marks to motivate others.
