Students should be careful about their categories while applying for admission

There are various categories for students under which they apply for admission or entrance examinations to different courses. Depending on the category of the student like general or OBC ward of army personnel or any other such category, the merit list is prepared in that category, and students are accordingly selected for admission.

Recently in Mumbai a student who applied for the LLB program of Mumbai University was on the merit list but due to some lack of clarity about his category he was denied admission in the course. Due to a lack of clarity and confusion in the matter, the student has now approached the High Court for relief and the court will decide on the matter after going through the details of the case.

The point is that a student while applying for any course or any entrance exam should be careful and alert and apply under an appropriate category for which he has got authentic certificate or credential. This will help the student to avoid any embarrassment or inconvenience at a later stage.

I remember what happened during my M.Sc admission. My name was on the waiting list. Only one seat is vacant and my number is two. But the number one candidate is also present. So I lost all hope. But the number one candidate is having no mathematics subject in graduation. Such candidates were not eligible for PG courses in Chemistry those days. The officials informed her the same and offered her a seat in Bio Chemistry for which mathematics is not compulsory at graduation level. That gave me a chance to get a seat.

A student should always be very careful and go through all concerned rules and regulations, eligibility criteria, etc. Then only the applications will be considered. In almost all notifications we will see this caution. Not only students but also candidates who apply for various jobs etc should also see these categories and specialisations properly and apply.

Thanks Dr Rao for sharing a real example in this thread. Students as well as their parents / guardians must be alert in these matters.
