How can we assess the efficiency of a teacher?

We all know that a teacher is very important for the student in learning the subjects. We say a teacher is good and another teacher is not that good etc. When we have to assess the efficiency of a teacher what are the various points we should consider? How can we assess the efficiency of a teacher?

Each teacher will have a unique approach and teaching style. There's no proven formula for success in the classroom. I feel the performance of a student in a subject will tell about the efficiency of his teacher of that subject. The average performance of a class in a standard examination will be an indication of teachers' efficiency.

There are many learned members on this site. I request them to come out with their thoughts on this subject.

How a teacher teaches shows what students learn. It's not enough if only one child understands the lessons. All students should understand the teacher's teachings. If every student learns what the teacher has taught, then It shows that the Teacher is capable.

It is not an easy task to assess a teacher. But if you want to assess a teacher, you have to look at many factors. The main factors or sources through which you can assess a teacher are classroom observation, students' achievements, students' feedback, teachers' self-reflection, parents' feedback, etc.

You should also observe the subject knowledge, pedagogical skills, student outcomes and professionalism of a teacher.

    Honesty is the best policy.

Let me be point blank in saying that a student would cease to be a student once he starts assessing his teacher. It should neither be done nor encouraged. It is your belief in the person who is teaching you that gives you the confidence and the motivation to learn. After all one becomes a teacher only after acquiring the necessary qualifications whether or not he is a good teacher. So who is a student to assess him/ her? Senior teachers or parents who have access to their classes may evaluate and correct teachers if there is any fault in their methodology. But allowing a student to do so should, I feel, never be encouraged.

Different teachers follow different methods for teaching. We cannot compare them. The point is how well a teacher communicates. For example, A is good in math and B is totally off the tangent. In this case A will definitely praise the teacher while B would be blaming him.

I am not ignoring the point that we do have teachers (now and then) who take up teaching just as a profession without any passion and is least bothered as to how their discourses would affect the students.

All said and done, I repeat that we should never encourage a student to assess their teacher.

As far as I know, in most of the European universities and in the universities of the USA and Canada, asessment of teachers by the students is an essential criterion for career advancement of teachers. In some select HEIs in India, this system is in vogue.

In New Zealand, such system of assessment of teachers by students exists even at school level.

So, what Saji Sir has stated can easily be countered.

A teacher's efficiency in a broader sense can be determined not only by the success of a student's academics but overall development of the whole class/school, coordination with other teachers, parents, and admin/educational professionals. A teacher must be efficient to ensure the success of learning especially of the pupil requiring special attention and who has been negligent at studies. This would be challenging in a classroom having a large number of students, but the efficient teacher should be capable of segregating these students to get into the success path as a mentor as well. In schools, students are not allowed to assess the teacher's efficacy, but in colleges, they do bunk classes if not interested in that subject teaching or teacher. Some institutions allow their wards to attend the classes of the professors of their choice.

A fruit or sweet can be assessed the sweetness in it only by tasting. We can assess the teacher's efficiency through the student only. For example, I remember even today the teachings of my school and college teachers. Including the jokes told by them I remember even now. This is, according to me, the way of their teachings makes me to remember even after decades.

From my point of view the efficiency and effectiveness of a teacher can be judged by the number of students who listen the lesson in an understanding way. If most of the students are comfortable with the teaching of the teacher and get the essence and meaning of that day's topic then the job of teacher is done.
If only a few students understand what teacher is telling and others are just sitting dumb in the classroom then I would not say that teacher has been successful.
It is obvious that teacher should not be teaching very fast because many students will not be able to understand what he is telling and at the same time he should not be very slow because if he is very slow then he will not be able to complete the syllabus within the stipulated time.

    Knowledge is power.

I never mentioned in my post about the assessment of a teacher by his students.
However, there should be a way to assess the efficiency of teachers. It may be by his bosses or by the parents of the students. How they can do it is the topic of the thread.
I agree with Saji that we should never encourage a student to start assessing his/her teachers.

It is really a pertinent point how the efficiency of a teacher can be evaluated. As far as I think it is not a good idea to review the efficiency of a teacher by his students and once such a practice starts, the concentration of the students would be on the other side. His concentration would shift to the other direction where he would try everything to find out the faults of his teacher rather than concentrating on the lessons provided by the teacher. It would not be a healthy trend.
Once this type of trend starts, the concerned student/ students might disturb the whole class with his embarrassing questions and it would be away of the discouragement of the teacher apart from wasting the time of the whole class. If such a trend continues regularly, the completion of the course by the teacher concerned within a specific time might be delayed or some portions could not be covered.
Let this part be undertaken by the parents of the kids who would go through the notes given by a teacher to find the flaws if committed by a teacher. The parents might meet the concerned.teacher to draw his attention if they find the repetition of repeated mistakes committed by the teacher. The best way would be to correct a confused teacher lies the responsibility of the principal, who can silently listen to the lecture of the teacher and would take a corrective step to mend the ways of the defaulted teacher.

Earlier, teachers were assessing students but now the situation is in the reverse. We are assessing teachers and schools instead of assessing our own children. No parents are observing their children's efforts or talents or daily routine but leaving everything to schools and teachers.
