What are the best ways to help students choose a college or career path?

It is very difficult for a student to choose a college or career path after doing high school or higher secondary. I am a teacher and I have observed that almost all the faculties of different colleges visit the school for counselling. But this is not counselling, they are advertising their colleges. The student gets more confused after so much counselling by the faculties of different colleges (they are not counsellors they are faculties of the colleges).

In my opinion, it is the time when students need the help of teachers and parents. They need proper guidance so that they can choose a good college or career path.

In the 1980s, there were no choices and wherever we got a seat we had to join. Many colleges are government colleges only. But now the situation is entirely different. There are many colleges and institutes. There are many skills and specialisations. So selecting a course and a college is very difficult these days.
The role of parents and teachers is very important. But at the same time, one should not try to force their decisions on the students. What are the interests of the students? In which subject did he/ she perform well etc., should be taken into consideration before advising the student.
We should not allow other college teachers who advocate their colleges as the best colleges to conduct information classes for the students. We can use independent advisors who will try to impress upon the child about the course and college.

Today the world has become a stiff competitive place and everywhere one has to compete with others to come up in the merit list.
In such a scenario it is very difficult for a student to select a particular line for making a career and get success in it. Parents and teachers also face a lot of difficulty in guiding the student in a proper direction.
It is generally seen that if a student is guided in the direction in which his interest and liking lies then the chances of success are more. So we have to first find out what is the interest area and passion of the student so that we can find something in that line and motivate and encourage to do the best in that field.

    Knowledge is power.

Choosing a career or a college is invariably a challenge for students and parents as well. The first step while choosing a course or career for a child is to know the field of interest or passion of that child. The right time to select their course of interest should be at the high school level itself. By researching the career prospects of the course of their choice, they need to understand the field of interest, its career options, and higher education in that field. It would be better to list out their preferred colleges or institutions accordingly and to have two or more preferences if unable to achieve the goal in this competitive academic world. To fulfill their passion, they need to consider the financial status under their parents' guidance. At present with immense technology and parents' guidance, they can approach the alumni of the colleges and the students studying in if possible.

Currently, the situation has changed significantly from the past when the students had to approach a college for his admission, not that some faculty of the college dropped in persuading him for the admission to a particular college. During my time, St. Xavier's College, Ranchi was known one of the best colleges in our localities and the passed out students from the different high schools were eager to get their admissions in this college. Though they have had other options in case, they failed to have a seat in the former college. What I recall up is that those were the years between 1965 and 1975. We could see the craze of the students for getting admissions to the said college. Needless to say, it maintains the same attraction though many colleges have sprung up near to that area but others cannot influence the students to that level.
However, the colleges authorities have learned the skills of publicity to attract the students in the name of counselling. A lot of colleges are seen indulging in such activities. Such a process might confuse some of the students but ultimately they follow the same pattern of ours ie they examine the reputation of the colleges while securing their admissions.

It is not an easy task to select a course, a career path or college for the student either by the parents or by the student himself. The simple reason is the availability of so many courses, career lines, and options which are existing in today's scenario confusing the student until and unless he is very clear in his mind.
In such a situation some expert opinion or guidance would be required either from the teachers or some industry or education exports.
The students and the parents can also go through various information in the internet and online educational and career making services about the job situation in the country and other related matters so that making a decision in this respect becomes easier.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.
