    Listening to music while studying

Listening to music is a very good hobby as it keeps us happy and refreshed. Some students listen to music while they are studying though it may not be a very common trait. I remember when I was doing my graduation I generally listened to songs in the background while I was preparing for my examinations. Somehow it helped me to concentrate more on my studies and at the same time enjoy the music going in the background.

What is your view on this? Do today's students listen to music while studying? Does it help or it is a distraction? Please share your experiences also in the matter.

Music has multiple uses. When we are not very alright if we hear the music we will become better. Music will attract not only adults but also kids. A small baby will stop crying if music is heard. Even some animals like cows, snakes, etc will dance to the tunes of the music. That way music is divine and people say it will cure some diseases also. A study by some experts in Industry proved that when workers hear light music while they are working on the shop floor, their productivity will increase. Many HR persons advocate this.

But I don't know how it will help the student in his learning. A student who studies should concentrate on his studies. But instead of concentrating on studies if his mind starts working on the music that is being played, how his learning will get affected is not known to me. I am happy to note that the author practised hearing music while he was studying and benefitted. I never tried this.

A driver driving the car in the night prefers to hear songs while driving and that will help him in avoiding sleep. Maybe students also avoid sleeping conditions while studying if they hear music.

Some students might be listening to music during the studies but that is not a general trend. In my view listening to music during study time would be a distraction only. I had never done like that during my student life.

Just as voluntary activities can cause distraction, music also will cause distraction. Listening to music while copying some notes etc may be soothing but the same will definitely affect one's concentration if it is resorted to while reading or preparing notes. Reading for learning, I feel, is a serious process and demands the total application of one's mind. So, even music can be distractive. As mentioned in the earlier thread, it is all about managing time and fixing priorities. Unlike some other chores where multitasking is possible, I doubt whether the same can be applied to studies.

It is an interesting topic from the author's side wherein he has indicated that the music emanating from the background helped him to prepare his courses in a better way. It might have gone to his favour but I feel that I would lose my concentration in such a situation. I am myself the lover of the music especially the old songs of the different Indian singers.

Such music might be beneficial for people who are severely stressed and want to relax their nerves in the musical atmosphere.

Good point raised by the author. The music is useful for concentration which is to be unified. This is helpful to the students to concentrate in their studies without diversion.
Sometimes, when we do some writing work melodious music in the background is also helpful.
When I was in Pre University by hearing carnatic instrumental music, I used to write my accountancy works which motivated me well to do fast.

Listening to music may help us concentrate on our studies because soothing music relaxes us and makes us happy. Our mind works in different ways in different situations and when you are happy and content it helps you to concentrate more on things you are doing at that moment. You may say that being happy is the key in any situation and if certain music can increase your happiness a lot it can always help to concentrate. In this case, I don't think that Rock or Heavy Metals will be of any help to concentrate on studies and rather would be a cause of distraction. In some offices and clinics, I have seen them play light and soothing music to keep the ambience soothing. A soothing ambience will make you feel good and let you do the job peacefully and that's what I feel helps to increase concentration during studies.

During my student days, we used to get a long summer vacation in Calcutta. During the afternoon, I was forced to practise Maths. and English grammar. While solving/writing the routine problems or grammar, I used to listen to music in a very low volume. However, whenever there was a complex problem which required deep study and understanding, I used to stop the music, finish that particular problem and then I used to resume the music.
