How to study- Calling for tips

It is a known fact that studying is a serious process. How we perform depends a lot on many factors including our interest and how well we plan our studies. I know students who are studious but they fail to perform well in examinations due to many factors.

We have members who are from different age groups and with varied qualifications. I would request our members to provide some tips to our students as to how they can improve their studying methodology. I am not talking about the regular points like exercise, independent study rooms or nutritious food intakes because those are not practical for all students. My question is what all points, other than those mentioned before, should be taken care of as a student while studying.

What tips would you offer regarding reading, writing notes, attending classes, learning, preparing for exams etc.? Let us become proper guides to students.

Study is a serious process and requires focus and concentration. For a fruitful study a student has to devote sufficient time and make learning a habit.
Making a timetable is the first step in the direction of effective study. That helps in earmarking time for various subjects or topics.
Another thing is giving weightage to different subjects. Some subjects might require more time than others or more number of revisions required for others.
In addition to time management one thing which is very interesting and helpful is mental revision of certain topics. After reading and studying a particular topic the student can try to revise it mentally during walking or recess time. This helps phenomenally and also helps in enhancing the memory to retain those learnings.

    Knowledge is power.

A good thread from the author.
My first suggestion to the student is to study the lesson explained in the class on that day and note down doubts if any doubts are there so that they can be clarified in the next day's class. If we don't follow this, the chances of forgetting the explanations given by the teacher will be there and continuity may be missed. Postponing the learning till the last moment is never suggested.
Concentrate on the basics and understand them well. That will make learning easy. Without understanding the basics going on reading is of no use. Read, understand and learn should be the procedure.
A small summary of the subject studied and learned on that day should be made and referred to whenever required. Never think that writing is a waste of time. It will help in remembering the subject for long. Divide time for all subjects and follow that timing so that you will cover all the subjects equally.

My suggestion is that student must study hard but they should prepare short notes or jotted points so that they can refer to that during revisions. At the time of revision some doubt can arise in the mind of a student which can be clarified by looking at those notes.
    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

It is a very interesting post from the author's side where in he would to know the ways of the preparations of the upcoming examinations from the students. The following points could be helpful to them.
    1) First of all in the classroom session, the students should be attentive to the teachers and should note down the main points in a separate diary. Such content should be frequently revised while going through the same content from the text books.
    2) Text books provide the students the knowledge of basics of the content and every part of it must be understood. In case of ambiguity, they must approach their teachers without fail.
    3) Formulas used in the solving in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry need to be understood carefully including the units being employed in course of solving. There must be uniformity of the units throughout the process. Such formulations need to be jotted down in a separate copy in view of its revisions.
    4) During the process of the study, the students should have the full concentration in their texts.

Being on top or at least one among the top whether at high school or college is a challenging task for students in the present academic framework. We cannot make a generalized approach for all students since the ability varies between the students. Some students can study and grasp easily, while others may need to put more effort into reaching their goals. Hence it is necessary to find the best approach that a person requires as per his/her ability.
Concentration, understanding, and practice are the most important factors to score higher grades in any examination be it a higher secondary, semester, or competitive. Paying attention while teaching, understanding the concept, revising notes after school hours, scheduling a week-end study planner, etc., would help to perform better.

It would be better if those who are not students go back to their student days and for students today to introspect. How did we study/ are studying, and which method helped/ is helping us? Just think about it and tips will follow.

Saji Sir has asked older members: "It would be better if those who are not students go back to their student days and for students today to introspect". This is appropriate for almost all.

But, talking about myself, I would like to state that I always try to avoid discussion on such a topic. Because my style of studying during my childhood days is/was not at all ideal. If I mention my way of studying during my student days, the guardians of the present-day students will object and the management of ISC may even take punitive action against me! But my style of study has eventually helped me to develop my interest in various subjects (which the present-day guardians may not even like).

So, I would only state that students may adopt different style for those subjects/topics in which they are strong and an altogether different approach with respect to those subjects in which they are weak.

When you study a subject as a student, the ultimate goal for you and of course the parents is to score marks even if you do not know the subject very well. At least, that's what I have experienced till now and after talking to many parents, students and teachers. Because marks will only give you the desired next-level entry.

Let me tell you an interesting incident that happened, can't recollect whether I shared this earlier or not, when I was in school. My father met the Biology teacher in the coaching centre to remain aware of my progress. When they met, the teacher told us that parents and students these days are not very interested in whether the teacher, under whose guidance/coaching they are preparing, knows the subject well. They are more curious to know whether the teacher will be able to help the students score high marks in all the examinations. So, according to that guideline, I would suggest a couple of things.

    1. Find a teacher who can help to score more marks in board examinations and prepare under her/his guidance. Nowadays, various coaching institutes are advertising wonders and you may get in touch with them with proper feedback from your peers.
    2. Various examinations have various types of question patterns. Be aware of them and practice accordingly.
    3. Time is the key to every examination. Understand the topic, and questions and write them frequently. The more you write the more you will be conversant with the answers and you will be able to write more answers within the time frame.
    4. Do not think of writing too many competitive examinations at a time. Concentrate only on a couple of them and then adhere to a routine of solving model question papers of those examinations.
    5. Keep handy Plan B so that if the Plan A of clearing such and such examinations fail you will not be disheartened.
    6. One important thing is you must find ways to avoid distraction. A couple of Simple tips may help.
