Importance of mental health among students

I doubt whether we have ever considered mental health equally important as physical health. This may be due to our ignorance about the different facets of mental well-being. There was a time when mental health was simply related to people who were insane. Things are better now and there is more awareness. Now we know more about different types of mental illnesses like depression, a few types of schizophrenia, mood swings, aloofness etc. We have been generally associating these kinds of feelings with our surroundings, events, physical well-being etc. while the fact is that they are all either symptoms or the beginning of some sort of mental illness and need to be dealt with assiduity.

That being just an introduction, my aim is to bring the important topic of mental health among students for a serious discussion. Mental illnesses like depression giving rise to suicidal tendencies, aloofness leading to isolation and criminal and violent attitudes etc are no longer rare among the younger lot including students. I am not saying that such tendencies were not there earlier but now the occurrences are more frequent. There are many factors including rift among parents, pressure of studying, indulgence in substance abuse, wrong use of the internet facility, social insecurity etc. that, it appears, lead the students to such stages.

It is for the parents, teachers, friends and family to identify the changes in an individual and take necessary actions, including providing medical aid, immediately to avoid escalation of such symptoms and to bring such persons back to a normal life in the school, at home and in the society.

Mental illness among students is a matter of serious concern and there is an urgent need to create awareness including removing the taboo in visiting a psychiatrist or psychologist for corrective measures.

What do you think about the whole issue? Let us discuss the different aspects like reasons, identification, treatment (medical and otherwise), rehabilitation etc. in detail.

As indicated by the author, mental health must be ranked as the number one priority for all students. They remain under severe stress due to their fear of their failure of non-fulfilment of expectations of their parents. Very often, their parents behave like a hard taskmaster often directing them to improve their performances to achieve the final targets of securing institutions like IIT, IIM, UPSC etc. The parents set the targets and they need to execute them without pinpointing the difficulties lying ahead in the execution of the same. Such steps are illogical enough to derail them mentally. Once the kids become frustrated with the behaviour of the parents, they might choose the wrong approach such as the consumption of liquor, falling prey to bad companies and many more.

What is needed from the parent's side is to take their kids into confidence with a touch of love and in that situation, the tasks become easier for the children.

If the children have lost their balance due to the stressful situation of their parents, someone close to the family should approach the councillor for the appropriate guidance so that they can restore their confidence in achieving their goals.

In my view, a student's mental health will have an overall impact on the student more than physical health. We all know that there are medicines for physical ill health and we can get it set by using medicines suggested by a doctor. But there are no medicines for mental ill health, people say. Nowadays some medicines are coming but they have a lot of side impacts on the student.
A student who is under pressure or tension can't perfrom well in the examinations. A student should have a pleasant mind when he is studying. Teachers and parents should see that students will not go into depression. A depressed student will not come up to our expectations.
Parents should never compare their children with neighbour's children and say that their children are not up to the mark. That will have a lot of negative effects on the student. Parents should encourage their wards and see that they will do their best in their studies.

Mental health of a student depends on various factors. One of the most important thing is the way a child is brought up and the circumstances of his childhood through which he started to grow. Experts in the field of psychology believe that the early childhood time is the crucial time in which there are many traits and habits which are formed in the child that remain with him throughout the life.
Apart from that the atmosphere in the school and the society where the child lives are also contributing to the mental development of the child.
The role of parents is also very important because they have to guide, support, encourage, motivate, and console the child as and when such situations crop up. Parents who know these things and behave with their children in a balance manner are generally successful in bringing up the children in the best possible manner. Such students are generally good in their mental stability and remain away from depression as well as unnecessary excitement.

I think I need to elaborate a bit more. For example, we generally blame a child who is weak in studies saying that he is not interested or is not putting in the required effort, but we seldom think about other possible reasons for his disinterest. Similarly, we find some children who persistently become irritated or even violent when his demands, of any nature, are not met and we just scold him or give him a beating or two, but do we give it a thought as to why he is behaving in such a way? These are minor examples of possible mental conditions about which we need to aware of.

The author is correct. Children are not considered as children in many houses. Parents are treating them as elders equal to themselves. It is good to make them trained themselves to do their own works like bathing, dressing up, taking their school books, arranging their books properly in the shelf provided for them, etc., Amidst it is good to train them in household works also. But at the same time these all to be intimated friendly and casually but definitely not by commanding. Initially the parents should do such works for them by themselves. Now we gents do even cooking, washing utensils etc., but during our school timings our mother and aunt was did every work without asking us to do or expecting from us. It is not definitely pampering as present parents are christening.
I am dragging the matter somewhere. But such commanding and complaining of not doing the above said work by themselves create quarrelsome climate in the house.
The good and pleasant climate in the house mending the mind of children and when the following are present in the house, the mental health affect the children very much:
    1. Frequent criticizing the children in the house by the parents
    2. To show that they are parents some parents unnecessarily irritating the children
    3. frequent quarrelsome arguments and even quarrels between parents and house persons
    4. when parents not doing the needy and basic things for children
5.when parents showing the anger or dissatisfaction on other elders over the children
6.In some cases the issues of the children in the school/class rooms which parents do not aware; this can be known and solved by parents only through their friendly talking with the student children.
Parents are main persons for the mental health among students.

Mental health among students is a pressing concern, with various factors contributing to issues like depression, anxiety, and suicidal tendencies. Academic pressure, family dynamics, social challenges, substance abuse, and technology's impact are key stressors. Identifying mental health issues involves vigilance for signs like social withdrawal, changes in sleep patterns, or declining academic performance.

Treatment encompasses seeking professional help from psychiatrists, psychologists, or counselors and employing therapeutic interventions like cognitive-behavioral therapy. Medication, when necessary, can be combined with therapy. Building strong support systems involving family, friends, and teachers is crucial for recovery.

Rehabilitation and prevention involve educational initiatives to destigmatize mental health, implementing stress management programs in schools, and creating a supportive environment. Community involvement in mental health initiatives and awareness campaigns further contributes to a more understanding society.
