What are the best techniques that are useful for a student to learn effectively?

A student will attend classes to learn. But all students can't perform equally. We know that the calibre of the students varies from student to student. In addition to that the techniques that are adopted by the students will also have a major role in this.

A student should understand and apply the knowledge in practical situations. That will make him to learn and remember the same for long. Instead of that just mugging up and reproducing may not make a student learn the subject effectively. There may be many ways of learning, depending on the type of learner, the subject of study, and the different study techniques that are used.

There are many learned academicians on this platform. I like to hear from them about the best techniques for a student to learn.

I fully agree that just remembering an answer and reproducing it in examination will not suffice for the purpose of learning. The student has to first understand the basic idea behind any topic or question and once that is understood clearly then prepare the notes in one's own language and then keep that in mind while answering in the examination.
Every topic has a practical side and it is necessary to understand the practical implications and use of a technique or method failing which the knowledge acquired becomes worthless.
Students who study the subject in a wide spectrum are the real gainers in a long run.

    Knowledge is power.

Learning is a long and arduous process. Simply reading the things and remembering is not learning. A student should know what is the use of a knowledge elements or topics in the real life or work life situation. Reading and studying something and then using that in a practical way not only for making a career but also for the over all development of the organisation where one works and for the benefit of the society in general is called learning.
It is imperative that student must consider all the aspects of learning during the study phase. More wider a student studies more learned one becomes.
Reading, studying and then appearing in the exam and then forgetting about it is not learning. Take aways from that reading and studying are the crucial elements which will be used in the life of a person and that is what a student must aim for and keep that in mind while undertaking various techniques or tips for learning.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

We have seen the students studying day and night once the examination is at hand. They don't mind even if the materials are mugged up. Their main intention is to pass the examination at any cost. Understanding the fundamentals will certainly help to retain the same life long provided the same is revised very frequently. This simple logic is not palatable to them.
What is emphasised to the students from both teachers and the parental side is to change their minds. They should be taught that the lessons learned from the text books need to be implemented in the real life wherever such a situation arises.
In relation to the development of the strong fundamentals, they need to understand the basics written by the author understanding the real context and in that way, it will help them to retain the knowledge for long.
