Poor students may require some part time job

Some students are from poor families and cannot afford to spend whatever they like. They would like to do some part-time work fetching them some money for their expenses. At the same time, they cannot spend more time on that as it would interfere with their studies.

What in your opinion could be the type of part-time jobs that these students could seek? Please share your ideas.

It is a good idea to the students that they should earn some money to supplement their income if they belong to the poor families. The jobs are of the different natures such a working as a part time attendant in the office or any job of their wish. However, they need to manage their studies even after discharging such duties. Keeping themselves busy from such activities might affect their study schedules.
Hence they should try their best to offer tuitions to the students of the lower classes who might be taught in a batch consisting of five to six students in each batch. If they could manage two batches of the junior students providing them the tuitions, they can have a substantial amount to manage their expenses without the dislocation of their studies and at the same time, it would be a cost effective solution. They will be benefited greatly with the revision of the subject of the lower class helping them to handle their current studies in an effective manner.

There are many ways these days to earn while you learn. Near my house, a family stays. The boy is in his high school. He stays with his mother and sister. Early morning he gets up and goes for milk packet supply, newspaper supply and mineral water supply. He spends about 2 hours in this activity and he says he is earning substantially. All the expenses he incurred for his studies will be met from these earnings. His mother takes care of family expenses. This boy pays for his sister's school fees also.
Some students take tuition to their juniors and earn reasonable money. The tuition class will be for about one or two hours. By spending one or two hours on other activities, a student will not have any problem in completing their syllabus. The only thing is critical planning. During my M.Sc, I used to teach mathematics and science subjects to school-going children and I was earning sufficient money for my expenses. My sister, and brother also followed me in that aspect. Making notes, taking care of children for one or two hours, and working as a sales boy or girl in the ween end will also be good ways to part-time earnings.

The scheme of 'Earn While You Learn' was in our college even during 1974. I and my brother were given work in our college library during our degree course. It was highly useful to us in those days. In addition to the earnings, we learned the practical work of a library also like cataloging, coding, arranging the books according to the language/call numbers, issuing and receiving the books from other students, etc., Our librarian trained us even in the way of talking to the other students as customers. Moreover, we learned to do the work silently as the library is a 'silence please' place. This helps us even today in doing any work without making noise.

This type of 'Earn While You Learn' can be implemented in schools or colleges by the observation of class teachers and School/ college heads.

There are some small jobs available around for the students but these fetch a small amount something like a pocket money in nature.
Doing a regular job will involve spending more time which might not be good for the students distracting them from their studies. So from a practical point of view this does not appear a viable proposition though some students could do it with too much efforts.
In some foreign countries the situation is entirely different as the earnings for doing part time jobs is high.

Though there is a change in our attitude these days, students doing part time jobs is yet to find total acceptability in our country while it is not so in many foreign countries. While we do not consider our kids doing any job abroad as unacceptable, it can be observed that we maintain preferences while accepting to allow our kids to do some part time job when they are with us. I don't think there is any harm in allowing our kids, rich or poor, to do some part time job while studying but we need to ensure that it will not affect their studies. Our school and college timings are also not generally conducive for students to spare some time for jobs.

Students can opt for jobs like newspaper supply, tuition, part time delivery or restaurant jobs etc. They can work for more hours during holidays. Part time jobs could supplement the earnings in some households and for some others it can help them earn for their personal expenses.

The negative aspect in this connection is that there are chances of students considering themselves as self-reliant and this may cause disturbances in the family. The possibility of children getting into bad company and practicing bad habits is also another negative point about which we need to careful.

It is true that even in a poor family the parents might not like their children doing menial work. Parents will themselves do more hard work for livelihood rather than asking their children for doing it. That is the cultural trait in our society and until all the family members take it in a positive way poor students will not be able to share their time effectively between part time job and studies.

Students from low-income families seeking part-time work can explore opportunities that align with their academic commitments. Tutoring is an excellent option, allowing them to leverage their academic strengths to help peers or younger students. This can be done online or within the community, providing flexibility in scheduling.
