Question No. 1: How did we celebrate 26th January before 1947? From when did this day gain significance?
Answer: On 26th January 1930, in the Lahore Indian National Congress session, 'Purna Swaraj' was declared to be the aim and objective of the party. Jawaharlal Nehru was the President of this session. From then till 1947, Indian people used to observe this day (26th January) as Independence Day.India ultimately gained independence on 15th August 1947 and the Constitution was adopted on 26th November 1949 (now known as Constitution Day). To ensure that 26th January remains etched in the memory of Indians, the Constitution was brought into effect on 26th January 1950 and since then this special day is being celebrated as Republic Day. (But it appears that many Indians have forgotten the history of 26th January.)
