    How to minimise wastage?

As the population is increasing, the amount of waste that is being generated every day is increasing enormously. The concept of use and throw is also contributing a lot towards waste generation. The concept of repair and use is also getting diminished. All these are contributing a lot to waste generation. Handling this waste is becoming a big problem for governments also. The waste that is generated is also having a very high impact on the environment.

So we all should think of minimising waste generation everywhere and practice it. In my opinion, we should think of reusing and recycling the waste generated. There may be many ways to minimise waste production. I request the members to come out with their suggestions on this subject.

Here I wish to share the saying of Holi Shri Sankaracharya of Kanchi Mutt on 17.11.1932 at His camp of Mylapore, Chennai. According to Him, Many people, irrespective of educated or uneducated, buy many things without real need, for the posh living and accumulate the things in the house. Next to locate all such things they opt for a big house. To meet out the financial crises they start selling this and that. To avoid such things people should control their needs and should buy or possess only the needy items. (Actually I read this message from a weekly Tamil Spiritual magazine on last Friday.)
Now this thought is valid for everybody. I am seeing many unused chutney sambar packets bought from hotels spread over the dustbins and roadsides. We, instead, can inform the packing persons while buying itself to avoid unwanted items - As some red chutney normally do not liked by us, I used to tell the packing person to avoid that.
In marriage halls many of us wasting the food on the leaf when finishing their eating. For this only the organizing persons introduced buffet system but in that also I am seeing many people waste the foods.
In 2004, I have been instructed by a Sardar Ji at Beas not to waste any food and to get the quantity as needed. Since then I am following that to the possible major extent.

Waste and garbage production is increasing day by day and waste disposal has become a big challenge for municipal agencies as well for other concerned departments. There is no place available for waste accumulation. Wherever we do it the place starts giving bad smell and becomes a health hazard.
The best thing for waste disposal is recycling but the present capacity is not sufficient to handle the waste generated.
In such a situation the only thing that is to be done is to control the wastage right at the source. For that only Government efforts will not be sufficient but all the citizens will have to co-operate in this and control the creation of waste right at their households.

The author has touched upon a very sensible and we all must take adequate precautions to curb the wastage. It should be the collective responsibility of the people to pay adequate attention to this issue. We all are taught in our childhood days to take responsibility for the clean environment.
This was included in all the textbooks books but the implementation part is lacking due to our indifferent attitude. It is not applicable for all the citizens but most of us need to improve our habits.
In majority of cases, we have seen that in the marriage functions or otherwise, there is a lot of food wastages and the plates containing the edible items go into dustbins. Such foods could have been segregated to be offered to the deprived children and other needy people to take care of its proper utilisation.

Today the society is moving towards a use and throw regime which is the main reason for accumulation of waste products around our houses or in municipal waste storage sites.
Another thing is the packaging of food items and its supply to households by agencies like Swiggy, Zomato etc. They are using a good amount of disposable items while packing which the people have to throw out after utilising the food inside.
The modern culture is moving to packaged items and same item is available in a variety of packs depending upon one's purchasing power. So everyone is buying some quantity and throwing away the packaging material.
Recycling is definitely one important thing and recycling capacity has to be increased.
I remember when I was a child and living in my village we used to burn the waste and that was the easiest way to dispose that but today due to environmental concerns we cannot do that.
I have heard about some recycling plants where lot of recycled products are made. But their number is much smaller compared to the waste generated in the country.

I want to add that today we are living in an age of consumerism and many people are believing in use and throw policies. That is creating the heaps of garbage. Another thing is that there are some rich people in whose houses a lot of material is ordered for groceries and many times some items are not used and reach their expiry date and then are rejected.
Such type of wasted can be controlled by limited buying of the consumable grocery items. It might look small for one household but cumulatively it becomes a big waste.

Being a housewife I want to add that kitchen is a place where a lot of garbage and waste is generated. There are many things which can be reused in the kitchen without much effort and the amount of waste and garbage can be significantly reduced. The left over food and waste generated from vegetable cutting and peeling of various items can be used for making manure in the home itself by composting it in a medium size drum kept somewhere in our balconies. It takes few months in composting and then it can be used for the plants kept in the pots in the balconies or verandah of our houses.
Very few people are doing this recycling and if it is done on a large scale a lot of kitchen waste can be converted to the valuable manure.
