    Today is Saraswati Puja

Today is Vasant Panchami. On this auspicious day, Bengali Hindus all over the world worship Goddess Saraswati, the Goddess of Vidya (Education). As this is an educational website operating from India, I thought it would be appropriate to mention about this auspicious day and worshipping of Goddess Saraswati.

The mantra for worshipping the Goddess of Education:
"Yaa Kundendu tushaara haara-dhavalaa, Yaa shubhra-vastra'avritaa,
    Yaa veena-vara-danda-manditakara, Yaa shweta padma'asana |
Yaa brahma'achyuta shankara prabhritibhir Devai-sadaa Vanditaa,
Saa Maam Paatu Saraswati Bhagavatee Nihshesha jaadya'apahaa ||"

    English Translation of the mantra:
"Who is pure white like Jasmine, with the coolness of Moon, the brightness of Snow and shines like the garland of Pearls, Who is covered with pure white garments,
Whose hands are adorned with Veena (a stringed musical instrument) and the boon-giving staff; and Who is seated on a pure white Lotus,
Who is always adored by Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, and other gods,
O Goddess Saraswati, please protect me and remove my ignorance completely."

I wish all the best to the members on this auspicious occasion.

Today is Sri Panchami, also known as Vasanta Panchami. Today Goddess Saraswati will be worshipped by devotees. Saraswati also known as Sarada, is the Goddess of Education. That is why in Telugu states today many parents perform Akshraabhyasam ( Starting of education). They perform Saraswati Pooja and start teaching kids the alphabet of Telugu. This festival will be performed on the 5th day of Magha masam as per our Hindu Calendar. The same festival is being performed in many other states also with a different name, I understand.
Near Hyderabad, there is a place called Basara. There is a Saraswati Temple in this place and is very famous in both the Telugu States as well as Maharastra. Today special poojas will be carried out and many people will visit and offer their prayers to the Goddess of wisdom. Books and Pens will be distributed to school-going children today in this place by some devotees.

Vasanta Panchami is a popular festival in our country and is celebrated in many places across the various states. In Uttarakhand it is celebrated with specific emphasis to yellow colour. I remember, during my childhood, in my village housewives made handkerchief from yellow colour cloth and distributed to the relatives visiting their houses on the eve of this festival. That practice is still continuing there in some villages.
Hindu culture is full of festivals and to respect every element in nature a festival is there for a specific deity. Vasant Panchami is one of them. In some places in our country this festival is dedicated to mother Saraswati and today we bow to mother Saraswati who is the Goddess of learning and knowledge.
I also convey my good wishes to all the members of ISC on this auspicious day.

There is a Balaji temple near our house. Some special festival is being celebrated there on the eve of Vasanta Panchami. I and my wife went there. After the pooja, note books and pens are distributed to all the children attended there by the temple committee and food is served to poor people.

I wish all in the ISC family a very Happy Vasant Panchami! Today, Saraswati Puja is celebrated everywhere in West Bengal, especially in all educational institutions, and this day has a unique feature for school-going children that I wish to describe.

No one studies today and parents also don't force their children to study on this day. It's an occasion for students and there will be no force applied on them to sit with books which is quite usual. Interestingly, there is also another reason behind this. Students keep all of their books and study materials at the feet of Goddess Saraswati for her blessings during the day so there will be no books left to continue studying.

On the occasion of Vasant Panchami, I wish all the members of the ISC family a happy and prosperous time for their families.
Let the children of the families secure their love of the Goddess Saraswati and with her blessings, they would prosper in their studies.
