Never compare yourselves with any other individual

Many of us will be comparing ourselves with others to know where we stand. But many experienced people say that it is never advisable to compare ourselves with others. Why so? is the immediate question many of us get in our minds.

Generally, Comparison may bring in unhappiness. Whatever we have may appear inadequate when compared to others. Then we will start thinking about what we don't have and what are our weak points. This thinking will make us nervous and we will lose confidence. Instead, we concentrate on our strengths and success, and we will start thinking about how to further progress. This will help us for our improvement. So I always suggest people keep targets based on their previous accomplishments and try to stretch so that they will be successful.

What are the views of other members on this subject?

Simply doing comparison and becoming unhappy has no meaning. Comparison should be done to derive competitive feelings in a person to perform better. Otherwise comparing has no other purpose.
There are many people in this world who are very capable and successful in their lives. They are the benchmark of success. If we compare with them then we have to accept the challenges of that benchmark.
So, theoretically, comparision can invoke competitive spirit in us. But we can have that without comparing with others and making our own targets with a positive and realistic approach. Every person is different in terms of capability and performance and has to select the targets accordingly.

    Knowledge is power.

There is nothing wrong in comparing if it is done for a positive and constructive purpose. Simply comparing because of jealousy or envy is not a good trait.
Generally, it is seen that people compare with others to find where they stand and whether they can improve and do better than that and if that is the contention behind comparing than there is nothing wrong in it.
The worst situation is comparing and then cursing our luck. I strongly feel that we should avoid such tendencies and rather concentrate in our own work and not waste time in comparing.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

Comparison will definitely be helpful to us provided the same is taken in the right spirit. It is applicable to all areas of our lives. Whatever the job we are doing, a curiosity occurs in our mind about how best we are from the rest of our colleagues. If such a comparison is done for the introduction of the best ways for reducing the time of the operation and raise standards of the quality output, there is no harm in implementing such parameters.
But changing the ways should not produce a negative emotion compelling us to think that we can never be excellent in our areas of opportunity. Such feelings are sure to affect our own potential and the net result might be disappointing.
Once I was challenged by my wife to prepare a dish of chicken curry and it was not an unnatural challenge from her side since she had never seen me in the kitchen preparing any dish. To cut the matter short, the ultimate preparation stood out to be yummy and for her, it was really an incredible event. For me, the task was not very tough since in my bachelor days, I often cooked own food.

My father used to told us about the different type of people with different abilities/structures/characters. He used to explain with an example of our palm and fingers. Five fingers in our hand around the palm is of different shapes and heights but with that structure only we can take a thing or hold a thing if we have similar size it is very difficult to hold or take a thing similarly we cannot take/hold a thing without even one finger. Similar to that with different ability and structured people only we can do a thing successfully. So on any account we should not compare ourselves with any other one.

Yes, I agree with the author that we should never compare ourselves with others. Every person is unique. Different people have different qualities. So, comparing us with the others will make us unhappy. I am a teacher and all the trainers always provide us with a very common example. You cannot compare an elephant with a fish based on swimming. similarly, you cannot compare a fish with a tiger based on running.

So, never compare yourselves with others and use your skills, work hard and give your 100% in every effort.

    Honesty is the best policy.
