Which one is better for the students - a standard textbook or a guide book?

During their studies, students generally refer to the standard textbooks and try to understand the subject. They also get many aspects cleared in the classroom and crosscheck it with their textbooks. Even after that some students do not get understanding of some topics in a clear manner and they start searching for some help books or guide books in the market on the subject. Some students feel that such books are more helpful to them than the standard text books.
What is your experience in this regard? What are the differences between a standard textbook and the guide book? Which one is better for the students? Please share your views.

A textbook or a guide, which is better is the question. If a student wants to just mug up some questions and answers and reproduce the same in the examination to clear the examination, I feel the guide is good. But if one has to understand the subject completely and answer the questions on his own based on the question, a textbook is the best.
A guide will never discuss the subject. Just it gives questions and answers. these guides are very useful from the examination point of view. But a textbook discusses the subject well and if we read a chapter in a textbook we will understand the subject well and we can answer even one-word answer questions, multiple choice answer questions, fill in the banks etc easily. The guides are very useful for answering description-type questions.
When I was in high school and junior college, I used to read textbooks only but not guides.

Standard text books are the best source of getting adequate information about the chapter with which the students are referring to. But one thing to be kept in mind that they should not be in a hurry to get their basics cleared immediately by having the glance of the texts but they need to study the materials with a great amount of attention to absorb the extracts being dealt with.
For saving the time, the students are resorting short - techniques to arrive at the right answers of the different types of questions without wasting their time so that the syllabus is completed ahead of the examination. There are floods of such books in the market guaranteeing to the pupils of the impressive scores, had they gone to such books. It is no doubt that there are lots of such books written by the eminent writers which would serve as the ready made reference in the hours of preparations and hence they eliminate the lengthy routs of going through the prescribed text - books included in the syllabus.
Sri M.L. Khanna is a brilliant writer and has written several books on Mathematics to be used for the preparation of JEE IIT and each book written by him would provide sound basics of the subject and hence referring to multiple books on this subject would amount to loss of time by going through the one book to the other.
A caution is needed to reevaluate the comments passed to others and they need to verify the use usefulness of such books by going through the same minutely.

Many students today use both the things that is the textbooks and guide books. Generally, text books have less number of examples solved and given while guide books give as many solved examples as possible. So the student gets the solved example easily in the help book or guide book and feel assured that he can refer to it whenever he gets a difficulty in solving it.
Today question and answer banks are also available in the market as well as in some educational websites and many students buy them or refer to practice solving as many questions as possible.
In today's scenario using only text book will not be a practical solution for exhaustive studies.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

Standard text books are more important than any other guide, though the guides are prepared based on the text book only. Since the students should aware the words used in the text book, it is better to have a read from the text book and for bettering up the student can use the guide book while preparing further.
My paternal uncle, though he was then SSLC, he used to advise us to study the lessons of text book before the teacher are taking in the class so as the words and content found to be familiar to the students. Further if we study the same again on the day teacher taken in the classroom, this will get strong in mind. Then the guide usage help the student brightening up the subject.
