Why many students don't want to get into the teaching profession?

Our Indian culture is having great respect towards a teacher. We all believe that a teacher is equally important as our parents. We say a teacher is a God visible to us. Gurur Brahma, Gurur Visnhu. Gurur devo Maheshwara.

A teacher is the creator of tomorrow's society. Today's students are tomorrow's citizens and active members of this society. A teacher is making many doctors, engineers, scientists etc. The influence of a teacher on a student will be very high.

But we as parents never want our child to be a teacher. We want to see them as a doctor or an engineer. Many students also give last preference to teaching. But, I never know what is the reason behind this.

Most humbly and respectfully, I hereby disagree with Dr. Rao Sir.
Even today, leaving aside upper middle-class societies in metro cities, the teaching profession is still considered very attractive and respectable in smaller towns and rural areas of India. With the gradual improvement in the pay scale of Government teachers at all levels, the teaching profession in Government schools is very attractive. Even though the teachers in most of the private schools are deprived by the school management, the teachers get opportunities for private tuition.
So, the profession has still its charm.

It is a relevant post by the author. He is right that there are many parents who maintain different opinions in relation to the careers of their children. They would like to see them as a doctor, Engineer, Scientist, and technocrat but not for the post of a teacher, though they themselves are basically teachers.
Definitely, they are guided by the opinions of their relatives and friend circles whose sons and daughters in different technical jobs drawing huge salaries in a month. This impression guides them to opt for a career in technical support with a basic degree of Engineering or even the parents are influenced with the medical professionals due to their fat pay packets or earn huge money by way of their independent practices.
In terms of teacher's earnings, they fit with other technical professionals but still, they despise this profession and that is known by the God only. We are helpless to change their adamant attitudes.

Long back about 50 years back when I was doing my graduation in a college, teaching was considered a respectable profession. At that time teachers were not getting high salaries and their salaries were quite less compared to the private and Govt jobs at that time. That became a discouraging thing during that time and many students chose the teaching job as a last resort. There was not much competition for the temporary posts of teachers and a student having good marks could get it but did not stay and switched to other good paying jobs.
This situation slowly changed when the salaries of teachers started to increase and became at par with the Govt jobs. Many students started to make it as a career and competition also increased.
Today it is a paying job but due to commercialisation there is deterioration in respect of factors related to respect and social honour of the teachers and certainly it is not like the old days.

    Knowledge is power.

Teaching profession is named as Noble profession. Persons with real interest and involvement only opt this profession. I am seeing many people availed teaching job coming out and selecting other jobs.
As a sweet can be only realised and cannot be explained in words, the greatness of teaching can be realised by teachers only. Tamil Poet Subramaia Bharathi, told 'Aangore ezhaikku ezhutharivithal aayiram Anna sathiram kattuhalil siranthathu' which means making one become literate is greater than feeding thousand.

Teaching has been a very noble profession since ancient times. But as time passes, the teachers' values and respect have declined. I don't want to discuss the reasons behind it. As we talk about the economy, the earnings of a teacher are very low compared to Doctors and Engineers. Once I read a statement in a Newspaper "A man who cannot do anything, becomes a teacher."

Though we say that teaching is a respectful profession it is not true in the present age. A teacher does not get the respect he deserves. Any time a parent can attack a teacher. A parent always tries to find the fault of the teacher.

I thing parents and students also know about it and hence students do not want to be a teacher.

    Honesty is the best policy.

Teaching is a noble profession. A teacher has to keep himself updated to teach the students and answer their query and doubts. Some students may not like the teaching profession because of personal liking or fear of not able to perform in that role. Some students are very ambitious and want to go in the administrative line rather than becoming a teacher and monotonously teaching everyday.
It is seen that students having an academic mindset and want a comparatively peaceful life go for teaching career. It is also to be noted that becoming a teacher is not so easy today as there is stiff competition for these positions.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

Though teaching is noble profession, teachers are required to do many desk works of late both in government and private schools. To get into government school there are many additional requirements like B.Ed/CET/DET etc are needed and in private salary is poor compared to the work expected.

In college teaching too there are many additional requirements making oneself to be away if at all interested.

Works that are to be carried out by a teacher other than teaching works, may cause detraction to a teacher. Chances are less to get a teacher post in government schools, Private teaching jobs are not very attractive as they pay much less. These may be the reasons for many people not get into the teaching profession.

Though the teaching profession is a humble profession spreading knowledge to the pupils with sincere efforts of the teachers. They might have chalked out their techniques how best they caould solve the predicament the students are facing. They sincerely want to provide the pupils the best so that they can derive satisfaction of their teachings to the needy students. The Majority of the teachers are of such moods but in the midst of their assignments for the proper guidance to the pupils, they might be allotted some tasks by the Principal they had never thought of. It could be the survey of the illtracy of the kids of the nearby village or assisting the audit to co- operate in the auditing assignment.
Such tasks though assigned to the teachers all of sudden, this causes distraction to the teachers from their main tasks. Moreover, at the end of the examination, they are accountable to the Principal for their disappointing performance.

During my student days I read somewhere that 'Teaching is a noble profession, but a sorry trade". The remuneration for teachers was lower than many other jobs. But the status a teacher got in the society was really enviable. This changed and teachers also became unionized and resorted to strikes demanding(and getting ) much better benefits. In states like Kerala, a teacher job( in govt and aided schools) commanded a good amount bribe or political payments, as once recruited their lifetime careers is stable and remunerative and highly beneficial. Even after retirement they can have tuitions or other teaching assignment which also will ensure income.

Simultaneously teachers are also being looked upon as employees in any other sector and now teaching profession has turned to be just like any other profession and a good trade.
But what discourages people from eagerly seeking teaching is the the nepotism and political favouritism and also the bribe money for getting a teacher job even in a private institution. This discourages many good candidates, and they look for other jobs where the recruitment is merit based or based on tests and exams alone.

Teaching has always been one of most respected profession in India. Students are not interested in teaching because it isn't a lucrative profession with less chances of earning big. There are exceptions if you are working in coaching centers and have a good reputation of producing successful students.

Everyone can't become a great teacher because one must have deep knowledge of their field of study plus you should be able to present yourself properly in front of your students. I have noticed many teachers in my life with vast experience but they didn't had the ability to express themselves properly in front of a large gathering of students. They behaved as if there was nobody in the classroom and kept on writing their thing on the whiteboard.

The biggest thing about education sector is that it isn't considered a business, which is the reason teachers are not well paid. I have seen people working for a meagre salary for many years without any hike in private sector. School management can't increase their salaries because education is a charity in India and government controls everything.

Humble yourself or life will do it for you!
