Some of these medicines are OTC (over-the-counter) type which means that people can buy them without a prescription while many other medicines are only available after a doctor's prescription is obtained. These medicines are very useful for treating ill persons but at the same time, they have many side effects and other complications which can arise in the patient. So one should be cautious in taking these medicines and should take them only under the supervision of a qualified doctor.
We have to protect ourselves from falling into the trap of overmedication. It is advisable to take medicines only when a need is there. Many times we can get rid of ailments just by taking precautions and natural cures.

The author is right. The body has its own healing system and for minor ailments such as cough and cold, indigestion issue, diaherrea and dystentry can be healed in the natural process. For the total recovery, it might take a little longer than not using OTC drugs. This mechanism is gifted to the body to take care of the body - system.
However, we don't follow the natural processes and always remain in a hurry to utilize the OTC drugs for speedy recovery. Even the physicians or the specialists are not consulted to save the consultation - fees. If such a trend is continued for a considerable time, the side effects of such over-the-counter drugs will yield a negative side effect on the body.
A patient habituated to the consumption of a specific medication whenever he felt body - pain. The indiscriminate use of that drug ultimately deteriorated his kidney - function to an alarming level within a short interval. Ultimately, he passed away at his prime age of 24.

We all know that taking medicines more than required is harmful for our health. Many times we want fast relief and take medicines which is not correct. We have to adopt some basic natural techniques and adhere to good lifestyle so that for minor ailments we need not to go for the strong medicines which are well known for their adverse effects.
For example for throat problems taking hot water and doing hot water gargling is an established way of getting relief. If there is no relief even after 1-2 days then we should consult a doctor who would asses the seriousness of the case and prescribe medicines.
Medicines are easily available does not mean that we should gulp them down mindlessly.

OTC (Over the Counter) drugs are meant for common ailments like common cold, cough, or fever, which are mostly seasonal in nature. It is up to the patient to make sure that they are not relying only on OTC drugs. Usually, seasonal ailments easily go away within a week with the help of these OTC drugs. If it is serious and doesn't go away, the patient must visit a doctor for better treatment.

Every allopathic drug has some side effects and overdose is strictly not recommended whether it is a OTC or prescription drug. You have to take dose according to your body weight and age. The kind of situation of the world right now, everyone is having health issues and it is surely not possible to avoid medicines. Overmedication is not advisable but correct medication is very important. In India, we get many medicines without a prescription from a doctor. Over-the-counter (OTC) medicines are normally for common ailments like cough and cold. But after COVID-19 people are getting more worried even about colds and coughs. So they started using powerful medicines which is not at all advisable. There are many home remedies for curing these ailments and I prefer going for them as a better option. But it all depends on the individual.
Once we visit a doctor, the course of action will completely depend on the doctor. We will not have any other option. These days I am seeing many doctors prescribing more medicine even for small issues. A good doctor will never prescribe unnecessary medication. But that sanctity does not appear in many cases. So we will not go to a doctor to the maximum possible extent and mange with hoe remedies or Ayurvedic medicines.

Many of us try to act as doctors when we hear someone is suffering from an ailment. If those symptoms match the ailment we suffered earlier, we often suggest to the other person what medicines to take. Here we try to refer to the previous prescription of the physician and expect some credit. At times, others also ask their fellow beings about the medicines to take when they are not well. Both these are dangerous and must be avoided.

Another thing I would specifically mention here is the relaxation shown by the chemist shops. Though I do not know the situation in other states, in West Bengal, I have seen chemist shops selling medicines to persons known to them without any prescription. Even if you do not know the store owner a little coaxing will help to procure medicines easily which should not be available without a prescription. Here I would say one must Know about Adverse Drug Reactions and ways to minimize it to avoid further troubles.
