Yes. Today is National Science Day.
The National Science Day will be observed every year on 28th February. The Indian Physicist and well-known scientist, Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman (C V Raman) announced the discovery of the "Raman Effect" on 28th February 1928. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1930. That is why February 28th is declared as National Science Day. Sir C V Raman was the first Indian to receive this prestigious award in the field of science. His invention is famous as the Raman Effect. This phenomenon is revealed when light traverses a transparent material and some of the light that is deflected changes in wavelength.
"Indigenous Technologies for Viksit Bharat." is the theme for National Science Day 2024. This theme is selected to increase public awareness about scientific findings and scientist who are putting in their efforts for the overall well-being of the public.

Science day is a very nice opportunity for the students to participate in science activities like science posters, model making, science based games and toys, science quizzes, etc.
Today we are living in an age of scientific advancement and technological developments and it is required that students should be exposed to science and scientific knowledge as and when such opportunities are available.
On this day schools and colleges can also award the outstanding students who have created working models or other science exhibits.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

The basic purpose of Science Day is to help people, especially our youth to develop a scientific temper (which has also been mentioned in the Directive Principles of the Constitution of India). But, we have all forgotten the purpose behind celebration of Science Day. Instead, we have made it a mechanical process and don't encourage developing scientific temper among the youth of our country. Superstitious practices are directly or indirectly encouraged by all of us.

In this connection, I recall what Acharya Prafulla Chandra (the great scholar of Chemistry) once said. He said that the examinees wrote brilliant and impressive answers about the scientific reason behind solar eclipse. And those very students followed all the superstitious practices associated with the eclipse after returning home.

Partha, you are very right in telling that the purpose of observing science day is to develop scientific temper in the students. The celebration is to be done in that way only.
In my view the students should be motivated throughout the year for engaging in scientific activities and the winners should present it on the science day. So, science day will not be celebrated in an isolated mode but will have an indirect presence in the school or college campus throughout the academic session. The students will also be remembering it as there will be prizes and awards for the final winners.
School or college administration has to play a crucial role in managing such scientific activities in their Institutes.

    Knowledge is power.
