Checked and found that keto-diet is not suitable for all
Nowadays I have been hearing a lot about keto-diet. As a foodie, I vehemently oppose any concept which advises me to take less food or prohibits me to take variety of food-items. But, as almost every second person talks highly about this keto-diet, I tried to study a little bit about this new fad, i.e. keto-diet. My research findings are mentioned below. The ketogenic diet, in short keto-diet, is a low-carbohydrate, high-fat eating approach aimed at inducing a state of ketosis in the body. By drastically reducing carbohydrate intake and replacing it with fats, the body shifts its primary fuel source from glucose to ketones, which are produced by the liver from fatty acids. This metabolic state is believed to offer different health benefits including weight loss, improved blood sugar control and enhanced mental clarity. However, shifting to this keto-diet requires careful planning to ensure adequate nutrient intake while minimizing potential side effects such as the 'keto flu' and/or nutrient deficiencies.
Keto-diet is not suitable for all. The nutritionists advise some people not to go for this keto-diet. Keto-diet is a strict 'no-no' for:
(a) Individuals with pancreatitis or liver disease: The high fat intake in the keto-diet can aggravate these conditions.
(b) People with certain genetic disorders: Conditions like carnitine deficiency or fat metabolism disorders may make it unsafe.
(c) Pregnant or breastfeeding women: The restrictive nature of the keto-diet may not provide adequate nutrients for fetal development or lactation.
(d) People with eating disorders: The strict rules of the keto-diet may cause disordered eating patterns.
(e) People with kidney ailments: The high protein intake in some versions of the keto-diet can strain the kidneys, which may be problematic for patients with kidney problems.
(f) Individuals taking certain medications: Some medications, such as those for diabetes or high blood pressure, may require adjustments in dosage or may interact unfavourably with such diet plan.
After my study, I have decided not to go for suh diet. What about ISC members? Are you planning to shift to keto-diet. Please do so after consulting your physician and a nutritionalist.
