Students seeking a job encounter big salary disparity

After completing their education most of the students search for a job. There are some lucky ones who have some parental business or private occupation in which they get absorbed easily and make a living.

Those who are seeking a job may, after good efforts and attempts, get one depending on their qualifications and capabilities but one thing that they observe is that there is a big salary disparity in the industries and business world around. They also find that generally in Govt sector the salaries are quite high and of course that getting a Govt job is more tough. This salary disparity is a very discouraging and demotivating factor for the young people who have just completed their education and then want to work for a livelihood. For a fresher, the salaries are ranging from a meagre Rs 15000 to Rs 60000 or in some cases more than that as some highly qualified and meritorious students are getting a big start.

Don't you feel that this salary disparity is to be reduced for financial balance and stability in the society? How can it be achieved? Can Govt do something in this direction?

When I was in college, the salaries in the government sector were very low and the number of jobs was also less. Even jobs in private companies were also low but salaries were higher than their counterparts in the government sector. But now the situation changed. The government employees are getting very good salaries. The employees in the IT sector are getting good salaries even in the private sector. The private manufacturing and service companies are offering low salaries only. Why salaries in the IT sector are high? There the investment is in manpower only. No heavy equipment cost. Many IT companies take up projects from foreign companies where the rates will be very high. But in the manufacturing sector, more investment goes to equipment and they how to compete with countries like China where the manpower cost is much less. This disparity can't be changed and students should show their merit and get selected for the IT companies so that they will get high salaries. Something is better than nothing. The unemployment problem is high and hence getting a job is more important.

I remember there was salary disparity in earlier times also but it was not so much discernible as it is today. Some private companies are offering very high salary to the capable persons and taking work from them on 24 /7 basis. These people are also happily doing the job because of the high remuneration that they are getting in that particular company. A question naturally arrises here that cannot that company hire 3 to 4 people at lower salary in place of that capable person and get the same job done? The answer to this can be given by the company management only and they might say that there is no substitute for a highly motivated individual.
Apart from that what we are seeing today is that the salaries in government departments are also on a higher side.
So, disparity is definitely there and it would demotivate the young people.
In my area the young people working in the shops or small establishments or other small jobs are getting around Rs 12000 to Rs 18000 only. And there is a large number of people in my town earning in that range.

    Knowledge is power.

In my opinion, hiring more number of people and offering them less salary is not acceptable to many managements. More the manpower, more the problems. So all managements want to minimise the number of employees. This is for private companies only. The government departments may not follow this. If you employ a person who does not show sufficient work, the employee may have a lot of leisure in the office and he will start creating unnecessary problems. I worked in an organisation for 2 years. Good salary and good facilities. But I used to have only 2 hours of work and I had to spend another 6 hours without any work. I left that job after 2 hours and joined another job where work pressure is very high.
Even in the IT industry also people tend to join product companies than development companies. The reason they say is the salaries in product companies are high when compared to development companies.

Even within a company, especially a private company, there is huge difference in the salaries of the employees. That is required to be rationalized if more employment is to be generated.

Yes, the employees would find a substantial difference in the pay structures of the public undertaking employees from one public undertaking to the other. Pay variables are existing due to multiple factors and the chief of the same is the negotiation skills of the union leaders with the management and the same situation could not be exploited in a different company. That is why we see a lot of variations in terms of pay- scales of the different public undertakings such as Sail, DVC, Coal India, HEC, Indian Oil Corporation and many more. We would observe that though basic qualification of an engineer working in the different sectors are the same but there is a wide pay- disparity in the pay scales of the different sectors. Coal India is the best employer in terms of offering payments and HEC would be a a bad company in terms of payments.
It appears like a gambling game for many employees drawing less payments for no fault of their. The best performers academically might be sufferers where as the low performers are getting hefty amount of payments due to the bargaining of the leaders.
