Criminal activities are, as such, dangerous, to the society as well as to the individual engaging in such activities. It is true that unemployment and the frustration such a situation creates coupled with empty pockets and ridiculing by the society does make some of them vulnerable to criminal/ illegal activities. I believe there are gangs that penetrate into such vulnerable groups and lure them with money to take part in activities like drug-peddling, hawala transactions, smuggling and to become part of gangster groups engaged in hired murders and other related crimes, creating social unrest etc. I think the society is also responsible for passively letting our youth to take up such activities.
Money flows and they forcefully gain some power which gives them satisfaction and a feeling of superiority. It is a vicious circle and one would find it difficult to escape from the clutches of such groups once you are in. It is kind of a trap. The strategies they follow have no moral principles or ethics and their only aim is maintain their position among different groups. It is a high-risk field and they always remain under the fear of getting caught or being killed or attacked by rival gangs or groups. But since most of these gangs are utilized by political parties, business houses and other social groups in the higher echelon, their clout is of a higher level and most of the time they escape from the clutches of law.
There are people who inadvertently become part of such activities and groups and there are people who become interested, due to different reasons, and go for it. The members belonging to the first group may be brought back to the mainstream with the involvement of the society and they may be rehabilitated but those of the second genre will mature, and criminality becomes their ideology.
While asking about the dangers involved, I think we should be more concerned and must think why it is happening. It does involve psychology and so the society as a whole, particularly parents, teachers and friends should be able to identify such traits and proper counselling and medical aid, if required, must be provided in the initial stage itself. The general tendency is to discard people with such mentalities, but I feel that we should not be doing so. Our attempt should always be to help them connect to the society and to keep them engaged in positive activities. Unemployment or lack of financial security cannot be an excuse for one to stray into such immoral and unethical grounds.
