Have infrastructure projects and construction activities not generated enough employment?

There are a large number of infrastructure projects underway in our country. Work on national highways, connecting roads, and bridges, desilting of rivers and water bodies, revamping railway lines & railway stations, new airports, and many other such works are under progress or likely to be taken up soon.

From so many activities it is obvious that a lot of employment should be generated. But what is happening is that the companies which are doing these projects are using modern machinery and equipment for working and keeping only the minimum labour force required. So employment generation is not to that extent as expected. This is not only happening in the construction industry but also in many other industries where a lot of automation is being done and the workforce is kept minimal.

Do you also feel that despite so many things going on around us the purpose of giving employment to more people is still not met? Please share your views.

The unemployment rate in India has been somewhere around 6.5 to 7% for many years. But in 2019 it went to about 10% maybe due to COVID-19. But it reduced well afterwards and in 2022 the unemployment rate was about 7%. In the coming years, it may come down as many new private jobs are coming and we may have a better position.

Unfortunately, many Indian engineering graduates want to have white-collar jobs. They do not prefer shop floor and field jobs. That is why many companies struggle to get good engineers to work with them. There is a huge demand for IT-related subjects only.
Another issue is managing huge manpower. Managing people is the toughest job these days. That is why companies prefer automation or equipment to manage the work. Many employees waste their time sitting on their mobile phones for hours together.

This is really a difficult situation that on one side we have so much developmental activities going in our country but unemployment is still a big challenge.

Automation and companies inclination towards minimum manpower may be the main reasons for this situation but there are many other ways by which we can try to solve this problem. One thing that comes to mind is that small industries should be located in remote and small places so that the local people can get employment near their living place and their exodus to big cities can be checked. Installing small units for processing of agriculture products in the villages especially where agriculture production is high will help not only to manage the agriculture products but also to provide good employment to the local people.
I think state governments have to take a lead in these matters and ask centre to help them through schemes.

    Knowledge is power.

What the author has indicated in the posting is the real scenario in our country. A lot of activities are going on in the different projects such as the construction of roads, bridges and other infrastructural projects but deployment of manpower is always kept the least since other facilitating resources are employed to keep the labour - force to a minimum number.
This would not help us in providing jobs to the unemployed youths.
We need to think of the development of rural youths where a huge population is in the grip of extreme poverty. They need to be deployed in the different rural development projects so that they don't live the villages alone for getting an employment in the urban area not enough for the maintenance of the entire family.
