    The art of precis writing

Precis writing is an art. In short it is the summary of a long document. But the summary should be written in such a way that it should be precise and present a condensed form of the main document. A 4000 word story or article can be summarised in 300-400 words or even less without losing the main ideas of the original resource.
Before attempting to write the precis of a document one has to read it thoroughly and understand the main theme. Then comes the task of summarising it in one's words. It is obvious that good vocabulary and writing skills are needed for writing a good precis.
What is your experience in this regard? Do you feel comfortable in writing a precis? Please share your ideas.

Many times we used to read a chapter completely and make a note of the summary of that entire chapter in the least possible length. This is also a type of precise writing only.
My sister was not able to study English when she was in high school. I used to read her lessons completely, make a summary precisely, and give it to my sister so she could read and understand them. This work I was doing when I was doing my PhD. That is how I started precise writing activity. Those days I used to give tuition to high school students and for them I used to write essays by understanding the subject and then making a summary.
As mentioned by the author, precise writing is an arduous process and we should be able to bring the whole summary of the article in limited words without compromising on quality and should not leave any point that is important for the entire chapter. Here we should see that the reader will understand your writing. So we should write the same keeping the standard of the reader.

Precis writing is an art and an intelligent reader will go through the whole text first and then will pick up the central concept of the document. In no way, the main point will be missing but the content, although short will contain the main idea.
Initially, precis writing might appear to be a difficult task but with a little practice, mastery in this art can be achieved. While writing a summary, the reader should ensure that there is no compromise with the quality and there is no omission of the main points at any stage.

Precis writing requires some practice. More we do it more we improve. My experience with precis writing is limited to making concise notes during my PG course. I had to study a lot and sometimes had to refer different books for the same topic and finally the points I jotted down helped me much in my exams.
It is necessary that before going to make a precis one has to read the main document thoroughly may be multiple times and then make a compact image of the original without losing the theme and ideas.
So precis writing is a meticulous work and requires seriousness and concentration.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.
