We need some regulation for online Management Courses

It has been quite a while since I wrote something for ISC. I was a lot unwell after a heart attack.

Fortunately, am okay now to a large extent. During my forced stay at home and a big direction from the doctors to avoid too many things ( I love fried vegetarian items but now forced to give up everything), I had some attention given to the variety of Online courses.

Management is perhaps one field where there is a free for all. At least two State Universities of Tamil Nadu seem to be in this game, as some franchises ring up hapless candidates, promising them great careers. Too many Deemed Universities have also joined the game

The syllabus in at least a few cases seems totally outdated and for purely commercial reasons only persons with academic background will double up as teachers. They are totally out of tune with Corporate events and cannot do any justice to many subjects that need a totally real world focus.

Is this not the right time for the UGC to constitute a big body of experts? At least fifty percent members should be practising managers with teaching experience from cities such as Mumbai and we need Post Graduate Diploma and even degree courses in Supply Chain Management, Capital Markets and so on.

    Will the UGC step in?

A warm welcome back! Glad to know you got through a tough health phase. Yes, you need to pay attention to the advice of the doctors.

A note- the admin. has now opened the forum for all topics, so feel free to come up with topics not necessarily related only to education/academics. Also, please check out the red-pinned threads at the top of the forum to know of changes in other sections as well.

Coming to the topic of this thread- Well, why only management courses? Any kind of online academic course I feel should be regulated in the same manner as regular courses. I am saying academic in the sense of courses that are offered in educational institutions and which are required to adhere to the norms of applicable regulatory bodies. General courses that teach a skill or hobby would not come under this type of regulation.

The problem is that it is easier said than done. After all, it is very easy to upload video-recorded lectures and these can and are proliferating in huge numbers. How will UGC or any other regulatory body keep actual track of them even if some norms are created?

Welcome back ABSivakumar. It is nice that you are back to normal after the unfortunate spell.
It is a serious matter if management courses offered by these institutions are not upto the mark. Now the question is to what extent UGC or any such apex body can control this and what would be the modality.
Generally, these regulatory bodies check the qualifications of the faculty and infrastructure facilities along with permissions and licences applicable for such institutions. How can it monitor the quality of education imparted to the students? This is going to be a tricky situation.
Today's business environment needs skilled and knowledgeable persons to run the companies. If students coming out of these institutions are not having good knowledge they will not be able to contribute in the well being of any business entity.

    Knowledge is power.

Welcome back Sivakumar Ji. I was feeling your absence on this site. Very happy to note that you recovered well from your ill health and doing better as of now. Thanks to the Almighty.
Many institutes are offering MBA courses and people who want to decorate their name with an MBA degree after their name are going to low-rated institutes even offline also. Their management degree is of no use to them. Such institutes should be asked to improve their standards and UGC should have a strict control on this matter.
There are institutes like IIMs and ISBs where the learning is of very high quality and MBAs from there will have a very high value.
As mentioned by you many colleges are getting deemed to be university status and how good these colleges are not known. More systematic and meaningful work is to be carried out by UGC to improve the standards of the education I feel.

Many diploma courses and certificate courses are also offered by many institutes. Many graduates are trying to get these diplomas and certificates thinking that they may get good jobs, But how good is the institute we will come to know only after we join there. So there should be a control on such institutes also. The government should direct UGC to interfere in these cases also and try to streamline the courses so that students will not pay unnecessarily for unrecognised courses.

I think UGC is one such regulatory body which can assess these management institutes in terms of their performance failing which UGC can take action against them. UGC might be doing it on a routine basis but if the assessment is not based on some stringent parameters then these erring institutes will not be caught on the UGC radar.
Students who do not get admission in top management institutes in our country, go for these common management institutes which have mushroomed in various cities and even small towns.
If the faculty is mediocre and do not have industry experience then how can we expect them to teach in a professional way.
In my view Ministry of Education should take a composite view on these issues finding ways to improve the performances of these management institutes.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

You are most welcome Sheo Kumarjee to be back to your favourite site after a short spell due to your health - issues. Currently, you are enjoying perfect health under the monitoring of your attending doctors.
The topic which you have raised regarding the quality of courses of the various management - institutions in terms of the quality of such systems is correct.
The aspirants taking admissions to the management institutions might not be aware of the substandard courses being taught by such institutions unless the UGC takes a strong stand to check the course content. At the last stage, the aspirants realise their mistakes in selection of courses. By that time, they have lost both their academic career and money which could have been averted in the wake of full information. Hence the role of the UGC is more important to save the students from being cheated.
Hope, the UGC body will take the appropriate steps to punish the errands.
