Let us have more of these kinds of courses

When I had a heart attack, it was diagnosed as one that required the Anjio kind of treatment and I was only semi conscious. Even before I was taken to the operation theatre, I found a very dynamic young girl, who would have hardly been 24 years old, literally running the show and ordering people all around. She spoke to the surgeon as well and was superb in coordination.

It was a painless surgery and I was in the special room a bit later. I woke up after a while and the same girl was there by my side enquiring about my health and telling me what I should have as food and so on. In fact, since my residence at Chennai was virtually next door to the hospital, I was allowed food from home as well.

I became a bit personal. I profusely thanked her and asked her where she did her MBBS course. To my shock, she told me that she had done a four year course called Doctor's Professional Assistance course. This would mean that they are even allowed to take emergency decisions on drugs to be given to patients, but they do not do surgery. They have huge powers to take operating decisions.

This course is available in at least four Deemed Universities of Chennai that also have the MBBS course and huge hospitals as well. She had however passed out of Pondichery

It was a simply superb attention that I got from this girl. We need many more such courses. I later learned that the Ramanchandra University at Chennai has over 100 such para medical and job oriented courses.

    AB Sivakumar,

I am aware of this type of course as I had come across something similar in Bhavani's informative article on Opportunities In Physician Assistant Careers. I agree with you that such courses can be beneficial. Still, during the recruitment process, hospitals and other types of medical facilities and healthcare centres must do due diligence in checking the validity of the course and the candidates' abilities before hiring them and giving them responsibilities, what with how candidates are reported to have forged their certificates.

Many such new courses are coming but as mentioned by Vandana, before joining one should ascertain the reputation of the institute in which they propose to join and the validity of the course in terms of the Medical Council of India's recognition etc. Then only a student should join in that college. Otherwise after completing the course, no standard organisation or hospital will accept them and take them as their employees.
The attitude of the person will differ from person to person. You have seen one example. The performance of a candidate will not depend just alone on the qualifications he/ she has. The interest of the individual, the working conditions and the atmosphere will have a big say on this aspect.
However, I agree with the author that more and more courses are useful for the candidate to acquire new skills should be started so that the candidates will have more opportunities to get a job.

The author has given a good information on doctor's professional assistant course and a case history associated with it.
In medical colleges and nursing institutes such courses are available and students pursuing them generally get a job in the hospitals and other such places in the medical industry.
Doctors will be busy with their schedule but these assistants can definitely give more time to the patients and do a good coordination between the treating doctor, nurse, and the hospital.
Students can go for such jobs and make a career in the medical industry.
There are good number of educational institutions offering this course as 3 years B.Sc. program and admission is based on the marks of higher secondary followed by interview. Eligible candidates can think about this career line.

    Knowledge is power.

This course is a new information to me and after going through the article by Bhavani I came to know more about it.
This seems to be a good career option for the students having completed their 10+2 and have interest in biological sciences and want to make a career in medical line without qualifying in NEET and doing MBBS.
The position of doctor's professional assistant is a unique position in the sense that it supplements the job of doctor-nurse duo wherever they are not able to cover the patient.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

During September-October 2020, my mother fell ill in Calcutta after the death of my father in August 2020. We took her from one hospital to another but she was denied admission in all hospitals during that Covid period. Finally she was admitted in a new hospital outside the city.

In that hospital, we found a young, vivacious lady who was moving from one ward to another ward, consoling the patients, talking with the relatives of patients and also doing administrative work in the hospital. Now, I remember that this lady also joined the hospital after completing a professional attendant course. We thanked her profusely when our mother was brought back home.

Only I would like to state that in Government hospitals there is no such post for those who completed such a course. Secondly, when I saw that lady moving tirelessly in the hospital during her twelve-hour duty period and often after that, I felt that such a grueling work schedule could not be sustained for a long period. I thought that the lady would leave the job within 5-7 years.

The doctor's professional assistant is relatively a new course and the same has been created to help the attending physician in curtailing time in the diagnostic procedure. The professional assistant would work effectively to mitigate the burden of his boss.
However, the aspirants need to check up on the permission issued by the Medical Council of India so that there is no room for frustration during their absorption phase in a reputed health centre.
Such a course is a requirement of the present time to assist doctors in course of patients' treatments.

The need of the hour is courses that will make the candidate acquire some special skills. Tthe student should be asked to do one or two internships during the college study itself, which makes him understand the job requirements also. When a person with some skill sets and some understanding of the work needs, it will become easy for him to acquire a job, I feel.
