Can we revive the old charm of village life?

I really do not know about other States, but the age old cultures of village life in Tamil Nadu was somewhat dominated by what one called Agraharams where only the Brahmins lived. Our family has one such huge home near Kumbakonam in a fabulous village called Veppathur. Today, the same village is home to a modern kind of Agraharam in the form of a resort, with each cottage built in the Agraharam style with air-conditioning is sold for Rs 8000 for a single night stay.

Life has become different now but the age old charm still remains. I had been to one such place some 40 months ago. It still has the laid-back lifestyle and the farming community is very active. The bus services to nearby places has increased by leaps and bounds and am now told that the same houses that were sold for just Rs50000 in the eighties now sell for fifty lakh rupees as the IT guys want weakend relaxation at these places, often reachable by car within four hours.

We need systematic marketing to sell the age-old services. Why not have horse carts and even bullock carts? Why not have huge trees where the tourists can enjoy a good sleep with full security? Why not good terraces on top of village houses, where one can happily sleep? The villages have their own methods of killing all mosquitoes and there is no problem.

Revival of rural tourism and culture can also be combined with visits to temples in package tours. And we can also have the paying guest mechanism with partners in different villages.

A good thought by the author on the 'back to the villages' theme. There have been a tremendous growth on the laying of roads to towns and villages in our country in the last decade. So reaching these places is now much easier. There are many modern facilities available in the villages nowadays thanks to the technological and scientific advancements. Many tourists prefer to go to new and unknown places which are not very famous as tourist places.
This is a great opportunity for us to revive our village glory by creating more and more facilities.
Govt can locate some basic industries especially the agro industries near these village to create employment and uplift the financial conditions of the villagers most of whom are farmers or labourers.
If there is prosperity in villages we all will be prosperous.

    Knowledge is power.

This is a good thought. Many IT employees try to spend their weekends in such green places. My brother staying in Bangalore purchased a piece of land on the outskirts of Bangalore. 8 cents land with Mango trees yielding crops as of now. Around 200 such plots were sold, and a restaurant, park, and children's play area existed. Many of the owners stay in Banglore. They can come with their children and spend time there. Some of the owners making plans to construct small houses so that they can stay overnight there. They can order food and get it from the restaurant. Children can spend time in the park and play area. The whole area is with trees and well laid down roads so that you go round on a cycle or even on foot also. If somebody starts running horse carts or rikshaws the people will use them for going round in that area. They have an association and the association will take care of the administration. Mangoes are plenty there and the owners can pluck from their sites and carry.

It's noticeable how IT personnel are increasingly drawn to spending their weekends in village settings, seeking respite from their hectic work schedules. This trend not only reflects a desire for relaxation but also presents an opportunity for rural areas, particularly in states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala, to benefit from the influx of visitors.

The presence of IT professionals offers a potential boon to village economies, injecting money into the local tourism sector. Villagers with entrepreneurial spirit could seize this opportunity by catering to the needs and preferences of these visitors, providing services and experiences that showcase the charm and authenticity of rural life.

By capitalizing on the interest of IT personnel in experiencing village life for recreational purposes, villagers can not only enhance their own livelihoods but also contribute to the sustainable development of tourism in their communities.

This is a very interesting post. India is an agricultural country. We can progress and develop only when we improve the conditions of villages.
I also agree with the view that lately many efforts by Govt are being taken for the benefit of farmers and growth of agricultural sector.
Another point brought out regarding the tourists visiting villages, I feel that there is a good scope in that and if the villages are clean and have some modern facilities then they would attract the tourists.
Water, sanitation, and dust free environment are a prerequisite if we want to attract the tourists to villages.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.
