One of the well-known innovator from Ladakh is on a hunger strike (Climate Fast)

Sonam Wangchuk, a person known for his innovative ideas is currently on a hunger strike. He demands Ladakh to have a full state status with rights like any other state of India. The strike is into day 15 at Leh, where temperature is usually in the minus. Sonam Wangchuk has doubt regarding the safety and security of the natural resources of Leh and Ladakh. In order to protect the natural resources and the culture of the region, he is on a Climate fast to make sure the power lies in the hands of the regional people rather than the central government.

The government is absolutely silent on this issue and media as always isn't interested in anything which isn't the usual masala news full of heated debates. The demand is absolutely in line with what was promised by the current government in their manifesto. What's stopping them to give those privileges to the local or regional people of Leh and Ladakh. What do you think? Should the government accept this demands?

The demand for a state in our country is not a new thing. In many parts of our country, in past, there was a demand of state and in most of the cases it was agreed by the government and that is the reason why there are so many states in our country. The reasons for demand might differ but the fact is that a new state emerged in those cases.
The demand has to be critically evaluated by the government and there are many factors which are to be considered before giving a nod for the same.
It is a border area and prone to terrorist and militant activities. The aggressiveness of China is also well known. So government will analyse the demand in view of all the situation and circumstances in that part of the country and it would take time for taking a decision in the matter.

The people of our country have seen the divisions of many states in the past. In the year 1991, state of Jharkhand was formulated which was the part of Bihar prior to its division. Even the district Manbhum was a part of Bihar and finally it became a part of West Bengal. Of late, we could see the split of MP and chatishgarh was formed.
The formation of the different states has been convenient due to the sentiments of the people and the central government has given a nod for the same to honour the sentiments of the people.
Apart from that the names of the cities are being changed from the older names to new ones to add glories after such changes.

In India, we have seen many such agitations for separate statehood. All the people of Andhra Pradesh may know about Potti Sriramulu we started fast till death and died also. Only after his death, the government of India understood the necessity of forming a separate state. When I was in high school, there was a big agitation for a separate state for AP. Many died and the agitation went on for almost 3 months. But the agitation was not successful. Later agitation for a separate Telangana took place and 10 years back separate state was formed.
So it is not that easy to make a separate state and the central government has to enforce the same with the consent of the local bodies that are ruling the area as of now. The government should think seriously as the place in question is a very sensitive area and our enemies in the border will be always watching the happenings in these areas.

If the demand is genuine and government feels that it is in the interest of the people of the area concerned then it would be accepted soon. Being a border area it requires special attention of the government and only after considering all the pros and cons such matters are decided.
Sometimes some politically ambitious people are also behind these agitations and in such cases government cannot linger the issue much because of political considerations.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.
