What attracts you more in a song - lyrics or tune?

Listening to songs and music is a common entertainment activity. Music soothes our minds and refreshes us. Many people listen to it after a hectic day.
We all know that a song has two parts - lyrics and musical tune. Some songs have great lyrics while some have beautiful music. Further, there are songs which are enriched with both. Some songs become popular just because of lyrics while there are some evergreen tunes on which many songs, bhajans, and parodies are based.

For me both are important. That is why I prefer to listen old songs than the new ones. Some old songs are having very impressive and sentimental lyrics which reverberate in our minds and make a pleasant listening experience.
Though I mainly listen to Hindi songs but lately I have developed my interest for listening to some English songs which have good lyrics.
I don't understand Telugu and Tamil but some of the songs in those languages have excellent music and I enjoy them without understanding the lyrics.
I have listened a few Assamese songs also which have a calm and serene music in them bringing peace to our minds.
I liked a few Bengali tunes also which I listened long back during my short stay in Calcutta.

The tune makes our ears happy. The lyrics will also make our ears happy. If both are good it will attract your mind and you will be totally happy. That is why a good lyric in our mother tongue will give us much more happiness than the same tune with lyrics in another language. When you understand the meaning only you can enjoy the song. That is possible only when you understand the lyrics. A song with good lyrics with a matching tune will make the song more popular. A singer should give preference to pronouncing the words properly so that the listeners will understand the words properly and enjoy the meaning.
The well-known singer late SPBalu used to say always about the importance of pronouncing words properly. There are words which may give you a wrong meaning based on the way it is pronounced. For a song lyrics and tune are the two eyes. Both eyes are equal for a human being.

Lyrics and tune are both important for a song to become popular. The tune makes listening happy for the ears. Lyrics make a meaningful impact on our hearts. Generally, people enjoy the song because of its tune. Lyrics are enjoyed when we are free and listen to the song more intently. There are so many languages in India and there are very good songs in languages tune-wise and lyrics-wise.

In this regard, as usual, my view is little bit different.

Just now, I have heard two very popular songs of the present era. The first one is 'Natu Natu' and the second one is 'Jamal Kudu'. I have not understood even a single word of both these songs. The same happens in respect of more than 90% of listeners. In respect of another popular song 'Gulabi Sharara', the tune made it attractive. In my case, I understood the meaning of this song much later after listening to it carefully.

So, even without understanding the lyrics, listeners can make a song popular. The music has the ability to make a song popular.

Of course, in respect of Rabindra Sangeet, both the lyrics and the tune are equally beautiful. But, people get attracted first by the tune and only later by the lyrics.

The author drags our mind to get tuned in a different way.
Both lyrics and tune of songs are attracted me in different situations.
In the carnatic music, the tune of raga is familiar to remember the song though different songs are in the same raga. But as for as cine songs the tune itself remember the song in us. One of my cousin used to tell the song and picture even by hearing the starting tune of the song in radio.
Especially the lyrics of songs affects us in different way and in different situations. This I myself got affected. When I returned home after all death rituals over for my beloved wife, I just heard the lyrics of one Tamil Song which I enjoyed and heard so many times before. The lyrics 'Unnai vittu Ponaalum un ninaivai vittu poga villai' Which means, 'though I left you physically I am living in your memories'.
Many times I used to sit with earphone for hearing carnatic music songs by different personalities. The songs give pleasant to my mind though not understanding the meaning of lyrics, but in some songs when we know the meaning the pleasure is more.

Both lyrics and musical tune play crucial roles in shaping the appeal of a song, and what attracts someone more can vary greatly depending on individual tastes and preferences.

Lyrics are often the vehicle for storytelling, conveying emotions, and connecting with listeners on a personal level. A well-written set of lyrics can evoke strong emotions, resonate with experiences, and leave a lasting impact on the listener. People often find themselves drawn to songs with meaningful or relatable lyrics that speak to their own thoughts and feelings.

On the other hand, the musical tune or melody of a song can also be incredibly captivating. A catchy melody can get stuck in your head, uplift your mood, and enhance the overall listening experience. Many people are drawn to songs with memorable melodies, regardless of the lyrical content.

As for favorite songs, it really depends on individual taste. Some people may gravitate towards songs with powerful lyrics that speak to them personally, while others may be drawn to songs with infectious melodies or intricate musical arrangements. Ultimately, what makes a song a favorite is its ability to connect with the listener on a deep and meaningful level, whether through lyrics, melody, or both.

I want to add here that sometimes a song does not click and does not become popular even if it had a good melody. It might surprise us but we had seen such cases happening in past.
For example a very popular tune of the movie 'Come September' (a box office hit of 1961) was adopted for a few Hindi songs by the Bollywood industry from time to time but those songs did not become much popular.
So a combination of tune and lyrics also becomes a factor in such cases.
The original songs first become popular locally and then spread to other places and when they become viral people adopt those tunes and put their lyrics in it. Because of social media this phenomenon is becoming quite common nowadays.

As far as I think the old songs of Hindi - films especially during the era of the 60s are really melodies providing us a rich entertainment. The songs and the tunings are so perfect that we would like to hear the same repeatedly though we lack the opportunity of the same.,
This was possible due to the combined efforts of the singers and the music directors to create such soothing effects.
Take films such as Guides, Teesri Kasam, Deeya Aur Toofan, Mughle Azam, CID and many more to name a few.
