NET exam now paves way to PhD admissions

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has taken a decision to allow score obtained in the National Eligibility Test (NET) eligible for PhD admissions. This new rule will be applicable from the academic session 2024-25.

So far, NET was conducted for making the candidates eligible for selection to Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and for the appointment to the post of assistant professors. Now it will be conducted for three categories - PhD with JRF, PhD without JRF, and PhD programme only.

The National Testing Agency conducts the NET exam two times in a year that is in June and December. The coming NET exam incorporating these changes to be held in June 2024 will soon be notified by UGC in its website (ugcnet.nta.nic.in). It is mentioned that this change is being done in line with New Education Policy and students can appear in one single NET exam rather than giving different entrance exams for PhD conducted by different institutions.

Is it that now the NET score is compulsory for PhD admissions? Earlier this was to allot JRFs and lecturerships. PhD admissions were based on the eligibility criteria of the particular university. Some universities are conducting entrance tests and some are giving them based on the marks they obtained in the qualifying examination. To get a fellowship from CSIR or UGC, NET eligibility was required. Now as per this thread NET is mandatory for any person to go for a PhD. NET will be a common entrance test for PhD like NEET for MBBS.
Anyhow, it would be good if we bring one common test for all the universities so that a student need not write many entrance tests and one test will decide his/her fate. Some in-service candidates are working on their PhD. Now is this NET required for the also? However, we will not know the full details till the notification from UGC is released.

I think that there would be some overlap between the old system and this new one announced by UGC. They might declare a cut-off date after which only NET would be mandatory for PhD. Of course, it will only be clear after the UGC notification.

Subsequent to implementation of NEP, many new ideas are being introduced in our educational system. Going for a common entrance exam or test for admission to PhD program is a good idea as it will provide a unified platform for the candidates and they will get rid of applying at various places paying multiple application fees and spending so much time.
Hope UGC will soon come out with more details in the matter while notifying for the June 2024 NET exam.

Although it is a new phenomenon as per the latest notification of NET, in actuality, this has been always there. Earlier also, only a NET-qualified candidate (either qualified for Lectureship or for Lectureship & JRF) was allowed to enroll himself/herself for PhD.

In good universities, such students are additionally required to qualify for the PhD entrance test.

Earlier students working on some research projects were allowed to register themselves for PhD in the same university and they used to get their PhD. There is no necessity for them to write NET and get qualified in that. Now what happens to such candidates?

What the author has indicated is certainly a welcome step and in that way, a single NET test would cover all the the eligibility criteria of the aspirants. They would save both time and energy with the adoption of a single platform for gaining admission to a PhD.
So far, there was a system of some reputed universities to qualify PhD entrance tests separately
