How can we increase the number of regular posts on the first page of the Forum section?

In the forum section, on the first page, we have some pinned posts giving us information about ISC, its policies, the latest changes, etc. and are useful not only for new members but also to all of us as we refer them from time to time. Below these pinned posts we have the latest posts contributed by the members on which other members respond and a thread is generated.

Earlier, as I remember, we had fewer pinned posts and there was good space below for regular posts and the visitor/member to the forum's first page could see a good number of running posts for reading or contributing. That means more visibility on the first page itself. In my view, having more regular posts on the first page of the forum has an advantage from that point of view but that would require decreasing the number of pinned posts.

It is also true that one who is interested in seeing more regular posts can go to the next page and find them. Still, I feel that a greater number of regular posts on the first page is advantageous from various angles. Webmaster/Editors may like to take a view on that.

    Umesh,

You have raised a valid point. A cluster of official threads at the top pushed regular threads to the second page.

Note that we retained the red pins for several threads related to the new changes in features and policies so that both old and new members would be aware of them. It would then avoid needless threads raising questions. We will un-pin some of them now, and any returning alumni or new members can be made aware of those as and when required, with the relevant links.

    Thanks for the discerning alert!

That is a good suggestion from the author and immediately the Managing Editor of the site agreed to the same and decided to unpin some of the old threads so that there would be more space for regular threads to appear on the first page.
Anyhow, in my opinion, some important old threads should be there on the first page so that new members can easily identify and go through them. They are just 5 or 6 only. The remaining can be unpinned, I feel.

I did the needful right away after I put in the response above and un-pinned some of the threads. If required, we may restore those later. As of now, though, you can see many more threads on the first page.

A suggestion- Since forum threads are no longer locked, members can make it a point to check out the back pages, too, locate something of interest to them, and respond, whether it is for the first time, or responding further in reaction to another member's response. Don't just focus on 'first-sight-first-response' that is, what you see on the first page is only what you will respond to, and only want to be the first to do so!

I do agree with the point by the author but what I don't understand is the reluctance to move to other pages to check the contents. Don't we flip pages while reading a book? I don't think it will take much effort to go the second or third pages to see if there is something that might interest you. How many of you check the 'New Posts' under the 'More' heading? While it is true that red pinned threads occupy much of the first page in the index, I suggest we spare some time to go to the other pages, especially because we no longer lock older threads unless they have become irrelevant.

Now we are seeing many regular posts on the first page itself which is a sort of convenience for the regular responders to the forum posts.
However we had an old habit of moving to next page whenever we find no interesting post (of course as per our interest) on the first page still this is a good step especially for a new member who can see many options at a go on the first glance to respond.

I also noticed it when I joined the site in the past but not now as it doesn't bother me to go to the second page of the forum.

You can always bring the thread on the first page by responding on to it.

There is no issue for me to go back to the first page to have some related information. Sometimes, going back to the front page helps.
Responding to the second page, helps us to look out for our required forums.

The number of pinned posts on the first page of forum section are significantly reduced creating ample space for the regular posts on the first page itself.
I am finding the first page of forum section more attractive and impressive with this adjustment.
Kudos to the quick efforts of ME/Editor(s) in this respect.
