Role of the Fourth Estate as we see today!

Previously, Fourth Estate meant the Print media and the Freedom of the Press were very often discussed. When All India Radio and Doordarshan came to the doorsteps of every house, their role confined to the presentation of the News at three intervals in a day and entertainment was their main agenda. But they too were vulnerable for criticism regarding hiding of facts and pro-government information presentation to the masses.

Cable TV/Dish TV networks with various News channels, Print media with political affiliations and the social media have changed the complexion of the game and all these elements form part of the Fourth Estate. We don't understand who is biased and who isn't, can't help even the intentions are clear.

What's your take on 'Role of the Fourth Estate as we see today!'

In earlier days newspapers were reporting the news without any bias and they are verifying the correctness of the news before making it public. Those days no politician owned a newspaper. But the situation is completely different now. Many politicians own a newspaper and a news TV channel. AP CM Jagan has Saakshi newspaper and Sakshi TV channel. Similarly, the KCR of Telanagan owns' a Newspaper by the name Namaste Telangana and a TV channel. Each channel is having its agenda and they try to report breaking news without verifying the accuracy of the news. So we have no belief in what we see in these newspapers. Only what we hear or see on DD channels on;y can be considered as correct. Today's fourth estate is also very much corrupt. They take money from foreign countries also and spread false news. So a common man has no belief in today's fourth estate.

Fourth estate was always a powerful entity and many leaders and politicians got benefitted by it in various ways and some who could not have cordial relations with the fourth estate Mughals, lost their political career battles hindering their progress.
Today I would say that this entity has become much more powerful as every person in the social media is contributing to it. A small news becomes a viral one in no time and the attention of the whole nation is attracted to it. Allegations are made and counter allegations are also made on a continuous basis.
Today social media is emerging as the biggest component of fourth estate and every leader or politician will have to honour it.

    Knowledge is power.

In the good old days (more than 150 years before), people used to get impartial, correct news from the media (at that time, only print media). But slowly but steadily, the media lost its impartiality and became partial. For example, during our freedom struggle, two English newspapers published from Calcutta represented opposite viewpoints. Amritabazar Patrika presented the views of Indians whereas Statesman represented the British viewpoints.

When radio came to the picture, it unabashedly presented the view of ruling party in the centre. Same was true about the television. It unabashedly represented the view of central government.

After liberalisation, the tv channels came. Such channels now represent the views of respective owners. Some are left-leaned whereas some are right-leaned. No one moves at the centre.

Same is applicable for the Youtube channels.

So, we must not be astonished thinking about the impartiality of the media/fourth estate. It no longer works to strengthen the democracy. It twists the news or even silences the news according to its own view. Common people suffer.

We have been noticing this trend in all major and minor countries for the last 125 years or so.

Press was always an important entity in the past and is so today. It is the open medium that can give opinions on people, leaders, and governments and the whole world gets it especially today in this age of social media.
A unbiased fourth estate is a great correcting agent and can do miracles in political transformations and bringing social awareness.
Today social media is so much aggressive that it has become a big influencer and society seems to be polarised on many current and important issues. If we read the comments of people in social media we might understand it more clearly.
Today, fourth estate is assimilated in our lives so deeply that we are compelled to be affected by its pangs.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.
