What are your views on summer camps for students in schools?

During our school days, we were eagerly waiting for the summer holidays. During these holidays we used to spend days in our grandfather's village. We used to have a lot of fun in those holidays. My cousins also used to visit that place. So we all used to have a good time there. No books, no studies. only having fun.
But over some time, many changes took place. Parents are busy in their jobs. No holidays for them. Grandparents may not be staying with them. So parents are making their students get admitted to these summer camps. thus present-day students are missing a lot of fun during holidays.
I feel, we should not take away their holidays and we should make them have some fun during the summer holidays. That will make them enjoy their vacation and come back happily to perform well in the next class.
I solicit the views of other members on this topic.

An interesting post by the author. Nowadays, summer camps for students are very common. This is shift from the earlier times when holidays were only for fun and frolic. But today we are living in a world of tough competition. Students have to compete in entrance exams, they have to struggle for getting a job, day by day things are becoming more and more difficult.
In this scenario students have no other go except to learn new skills and other practical aspects of the education.
Summer camps are a useful activity in this aspect and help students to sharpen their skills. In the new business environment everything is changing and students have to adopt activities as per the changing environment.

The matter has been discussed many a time in this Forum section.

Now, my opinion on summer camps. During summer holidays, these summer camps are being organized in all major cities in India. Huge amounts are charged by the organizers and the parents pay such amounts thinking that during long summer holidays, their children would learn something that would later build their careers.

However, my experience is that most of the children are dead against such camps. They are unwilling to attend such camps but are forced to join due to their parents. Children want to enjoy summer vacation with their elder relatives (grandparents) and friends.

I request present-day guardians to let their children enjoy relative freedom during the summer holidays. Let them play. Let them remain with their grandparents. They will develop values and ethics. Let them play with friends. They will learn leadership qualities, team-building and many other valuable management techniques. Let them study during the morning and evening (mainly English and Maths.), read story books and play to their hearts' content. Let them enjoy life.

I request the guardians to change their mindset. Let their children blossom into complete human beings and not emotionless robots.

Let the guardians read Stephen Spender's poem 'An Elementary School Classroom in a Slum' and understand the mentality of the school-going children.

Let us all force the organizers of summer camps to stop this lucrative business in the name of developing children.

Children are always interested in holidays and associated fun. They wait for it year long. When told to attend summer camps instead of holidays they will simply obey the parents but would feel sad in their hearts.
The problem today is the increasing competition for making a career and many agencies, institutions, and coaching centres are offering a myriad of short courses, practical interactions, and learning camps to allure the students as well as their parents to it and are charging good amount for these engagements.
So, parents are in a fix - whether to send their children for it or not.

    Knowledge is power.

Students feel delighted that the holidays are approaching fast. They would have enough time to spend with their friends and enjoy the period with fun and frolic. However, the summer - camp is a new approach devised by the institutions to promote the skills of the students. The students don't show any interest in such programs but there is no option but to obey their parents.
Unlike in the past time, the current time is stiff time and to compete any examination, especially the competitive tests, the students need the new skills to tackle such examinations. Hence it is a right approach to guide the students to take part in such a learning - session.
Coaching centres and even many schools are conducting such valuable programs and students will be benefited from such a programme.
