We just cannot afford to remain complacent

There are highly disturbing signs to the survival of democracy in India. We are far away from being as independent as we were, in the early eighties. Vast sections of the media are under the control of a powerful lobby. There is absolute corporate control over media.

Some attempts were made to control the judiciary as well. However, there were some five superb judges of the Supreme Court, who opposed all the dangerous designs and came out with landmark judgments, like the one on electoral bonds.

We need a big push towards talking in the social media and expressing strong disapproval of dictatorship, of anyone who attempts to go beyond the reasonable limits of decency.

Unless we do this, all democratic norms and traditions will go out of the window.

The analysis by author is indicating that media is under control of a lobby but today we are seeing media is highly polarised about so many issues in the country and for every remark there is a counter remark by someone. Some channels are favouring some parties while some are praising the present regime. Some You tubers are talking of nation building and national feelings. Some others are telling that capitalism is progressing. So there are various views by various agencies and everyone seems to tell freely what one wants. So, I am not seeing media under any control of any entity.
Regarding dictatorship there are varying views. Some are telling that investigating authorities are targetting the opposition parties while some are praising the anti corruption drive. Common people are as free as ever and enjoying the Govt facilities which are increasing day by day. If central Govt is not able to provide some specific help then states are coming ahead aggressively. So where is the dictatorship and who is the dictator? I am not able to make out.

#778339, I think the author is thinking about the Tamil Nadu government that is controlling the Tamil media and acting like a dictator and the author is generalising it to total India.

The author has raised some issues in this post and he has made a number of points highlighting that democracy is in danger. The author also categorically mentioned that media is biased and capitalism is entering the country.
My perception is different. In the recent years we are seeing an unprecedented industrial growth. Indian economy is progressing ahead and same is acknowledged by global agencies. Many Govt schemes and benefits are reaching to the poor directly in their Jan Dhan Bank account. Infrastructural growth is also very much evident.
The present Govt is trying to bring prosperity to the people in many ways and new means are being explored. Corruption is being dealt severely and some big leaders as well as maphia people and goons are in jail.
Women are being given their due through various policies only meant for women. Some of the states in our country have made the bus travel free for women.
Only thing where Govt is still struggling is unemployment and absolute corruption free governance in the country. Let us see how these problems are treated and dealt in the coming times.

The author has not specifically said, but reading this post carefully, it is felt that the author is talking about the autocratic tendencies being displayed by the state governments of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, West Bengal and NCR of Delhi. These governments are trying to silence the opposition by using brute majority and politicization of the various organs of the states.

The tendency of dictatorship has come into rulers from the day one we got our independence, I feel. Nehru, Indira Gandhi and then Sonia Gandhi etc., showed this tendency while they were in ruling. Emergency was declared without any logic and the whole nation opposed it. We can show many such examples where the rulers forgot that they were ruling a democratic nation and thought that they were dictators.
Now in many states, the same tendency is going on but people are not innocent. KCR of Telangana thought that he would be a permanent ruler of the state. He behaved as a dictator only and now he paid the penalty. His daughter is in prison. Similarly, AP CM, Jagan thinks that he will be there at the helm of the affairs forever. But what the voter is going to do is not known.
As mentioned by other members in many other states such dictators are also at the helm of the affairs. They should change their way of functioning. Otherwise, the voters will teach them a lesson and take them out of power in the next elections.
