Skill is more important than educational degree

A educational degree refers to a broad category of knowledge, while skills refer to a specific ability or expertise. Employers are looking for specific skills in order to fill the exact needs of their company, instead of general knowledge that may not be as applicable.
Skills are more important than degrees is because they are directly applicable to the job at hand. Skilled person can make valuable contribution to any organization. Whereas, A candidate with a degree may have a broad understanding of a subject, but without the specific skills needed to perform the job, they may struggle to succeed in the role. .As a result, employers are increasingly looking for candidates who have the ability to quickly learn and adapt to new skills, rather than those who have a degree in a specific field.
candidate with a degree may have a broad understanding of a subject, but without the specific skills needed to perform the job, they may struggle to succeed in the role.

I remember in our times that is when I was in school or college if I passed my exam satisfactorily then it was said to be the great achievement and there was no concept of learning any skills because that was not asked or needed for jobs at that time. At the most for some jobs they would ask whether we knew typing and shorthand or not and that was all required.
Things changed with time as the scope of education spread in a big way and many things in the nature of skill emerged and slowly became additional qualification for getting a job. More emphasis on practicals was also given in the courses and the whole structure of education started to move in a direction of skill based knowledge acquisition.
Today students are learning so many things alongwith their noral syllabus. Online courses have flooded the internet. Everyone is learning something over and above academic syllabus. This is the need of the present day industrial and business environment and we have to acquire skills of various kinds if we want to compete.

There is a surge in unemployment and in that situation, it would be advantageous to learn skiil which could help an aspirant to get a job for which he has secured a skill. The employer wants to ensure that he has a perfect employee with the perfect sense of understanding of the job required in the organisation.
In the past, improvement of skills was not needed since the employers needed more man power to raise their output. They were in need of staff immediately and hence they adopted the manpower according to their qualifications.

Today skills are becoming very important and all the innovations and new ideas are emerging through skill integration with academics.
Long back when I did my PG and got a job in a highly practical environment where a lot of field work was involved, I found myself quite handicapped and had to learn so many things from my seniors as those things were not available in the textbooks of that time. Moreover, internet was not there where one can get anything so easily today.
During that phase I learned a number of technical things as well as tips and tricks which were very useful for my career later.
Today technology is changed much but those basic technical practical skills are even helping me today to understand many modern things as easily as the young people are able to learn.
I fully agree that today skills are dominating everywhere in the industrial as well as business environment.

This has been discussed on our site many times. Skills are more important than qualifications. But skills added to qualifications will make you climb the ladder quickly. A particular skill may get you a job at shop floor level. A qualification added to skills will help you flourish. Bookish knowledge is not sufficient to get accustomed to the working atmosphere and understand the work properly. On job training is very important and that on jopb training will give you the required skill. This on job training will be taught in internships. So these internships are designed in such a way the student will get the required skills for managing the job properly.
The new education policy is giving more importance towards this issue. That is why in this policy many choices are given to the student to select and get trained. Some trades are also introduced at a very primary level and students who wants to get settled early can go for these specilisations.

De-linking of jobs with degrees was an old concept initiated during Rajiv Gandhi regime. The idea of skill development and improvement of vocational education was generated during his time. As Dr.Rao rightly said qualification and skills go simultaneously and one will flourish only when he is having relevant qualification or at least a degree.

In this context, I refer to a live experience of my Cousin's son at Hyderabad. He developed an interest in Electronics since childhood and in this process, he lost in his Intermediate Exam. Parents thought of sending him to an Engineering college but this guy failed miserably in academics. Later his passion towards Animation made him to join a reputed college to take up Diploma and he flourished well. Yet had to lag behind with the simple reason that he has no Degree. So, skill development may earn food for you but you should think of your future too.

It's a pity that people with PhD qualifications are applying for chaprasi jobs in India. It shows that Indian education system is a failed one and people are just becoming fools after studying higher. Higher the qualification lesser is the chances of employment these days because employers think it is difficult to make them work. Any high demand skill related to their field can help a person land a job because companies want skilled workers not degree holders.
Humble yourself or life will do it for you!

It is unfortunate phase that there are a lot of youths not getting the right job despite the possession of higher qualifications. Some posts appear in the different newspapers restricting the candidates from applying in case they are highly qualified.
The situation is shocking. Though the candidates are interested to get a class four in the wake of non availability of the matching jobs they are disqualified.
The affected youths might go under trauma due to their unemployment status. We should not forget that majority are married and have their issues to bring them up with right education and other maintenance.

Skill and educational degrees are both valuable assets, but they serve different purposes and contexts. While educational degrees provide a structured learning environment and theoretical knowledge, skills are the practical application of that knowledge in real-world scenarios.

Additionally, skills are more accessible to individuals from diverse backgrounds who may not have had the opportunity to pursue higher education due to various reasons.

Ultimately, while educational degrees undoubtedly hold value, the primacy of skill in today's job market underscores the importance of practical proficiency and the ability to continually adapt and learn in an ever-changing professional landscape.

Many people differentiate between academic degrees and skill learnings just because our educational system is like that. If everything that is theory and practice is amalgamated in the syllabus in the beginning itself then there is no such demarcation.
For example if a student had never learnt Excel (a spreadsheet app) then after completion of his educational career he would find it a drawback. So many basic skills are around which should be made a part of the syllabus even if we have to cut down a portion of advanced theory topics.
Today many students are advised or even being forced by their parents to acquire skills as part time during their studies and summer camps are one example of that.
So, learning skills has become an inevitable activity today and we must embrace it with interest.

I agree with the author that skills are more important than a degree. After getting a degree, you have to apply for any job and every company especially multinational companies try to find out the different skills in you which are important for the company. So, always try to develop different skills which will really help you to making a good carrier.

Sensible management like Tata Steel takes care of the skills of the employees. The management recruits the employees including the executives with a thorough screening. The management evaluates the different characteristics of the employees so that they can contribute in a significant way to raise the output set by the company.
Apart from retaining the efficient pool of the workforce, the management takes due consideration of the special skills of their employees.
While visiting the company to know their work culture, I noticed a worker of Blast Furnace estimating the exact temperature of the hot metal by observing the colour and tapping the hot metal immediately. There was no need for the further analysis using instrumentation or a laboratory analysis.

From the above discussion it emerges that skill acquisition has become an essential activity and one must acquire it to become successful in one's career.
The skill type is also changing with time. There was a time when only skill required for a steno or secretary was shorthand writing and taking dictation. Today he or she has to be expert in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint presentation.
In coming times more changes are expected where new learnings would be essential to compete in the job market.
We are living in a dynamic world where changed are taking place at a fast pace.

Our spiritual Guru used to tell that by mere reading one cannot achieve anything but only doing according to the reading.
He further told an example also. Mere reading a cookery book one cannot achieve anything but if he prepare the item accordingly and taste, his effort got fulfilled.
Thiruvalluvar in Thirukural told,'Karka kasadara katrapin nirka atharku thaga' Here he stressed that one should adhere whatever learned.
So, the degree and education is based things and one should enrich his/her skill with that learning.
