A curriculum to become more humane!

We discuss a lot about the education system, updating the curriculum to be in sync with the industry, job-oriented training programs, etc. These are all necessary and from time to time, authorities come up with various changes. Still, there is unemployment, an unskilled workforce, enmity among individuals, lesser concern for others, even family members, and more importantly, incompetent people managing shows in some places. Here, incompetency doesn't mean the person is inefficient totally but not competent enough for that specific job. I am sure you will find such persons if you look around. How they get into that job is a different question and not the focus here. Well, some may argue saying everything cannot go well with the system but does it mean we will not think of such a system which will help to enhance the lives of everyone? After all, from childhood, the training imparted to all children should be such that they can manage their lives efficiently and enhance the quality of life of society.

Are you surprised by my concern for the well-being of the society we are living in? You may ask why should society come into the picture and it would be fine if training is provided to make an individual self-sufficient. I think here it makes a big difference. So far, the curriculum is much focused on following a specific prescription that helps an individual to score good marks and excel in their career but then also not everyone can excel in their career path. There may be a couple of subjects like Moral Science / Social skills, etc. but that's limited to a specific class/standard and teaches through some examples. Is it possible to design a curriculum that will enhance the quality of life of each individual? Here quality of life is not only related to financial stability but also to developing the thought process to manage our own life and the lives of people around us efficiently. I feel the present system focuses too much on individual goals and we keep complaining of less humane qualities.

Is it possible to develop such a curriculum so that we can become more humane? Please share your ideas on this aspect.

A well organised thought provoking post by the author. A curriculum to make the young people to learn human values and inculcate to do good for society is a welcome measure and can be designed by the experts. Only thing is it is not only the curriculum from where the students pick up their good traits but it is from the society they live and the family where they dwell with their parents.
So if we want to bring this great change in the young people today then we will have to apply a strategy attacking the problem from multiple sides.
It means all the stakeholders have to contribute in this and that encompasses right from the system governance to society around us. Everyone has to supplement with the curriculum which we are talking of to apply in educational institutes.
Such great ideas can be transformed in reality only when collective efforts are made utilising the collective wisdom in best possible way.

Knowledge is power.

A nice thought from the author. We are raising our children and teaching them how to earn, become rich, and enjoy their lives. But are we attempting to teach them about the importance of loving fellow human beings and being concerned for them? During my childhood days, my grandfather used to tell us many stories which will carry some meaning and morals. At the end of the story, he told us what we should and should not do. I have learned many important points from those stories. But in the present world of competition, nobody has time or patience to tell stories to kids. Now children will be asked to see videos and play video games and maids will be taking care of the kids.
Making a curriculum that makes us more humane is a good way of teaching the children the importance of being humane. At the high school, there should be some dedicated classes to teach the importance of human values and morals. But one should not feel that that is only important for passing the examination and should feel that they should practice them in their daily life.

We all are human beings but how many of us are having human touch? Are we sensitive to the feelings, sentiments, and needs of the other people? Have we ever learnt how to be polite and courteous with others? Did our parents ever told us that it was our duty to help the poor, needy, and destitute? Did we learn any such things in our school or college?
If the answer to all these questions is in negative then we are definitely lacking some qualities which make us humane in our nature and in dealing with others.
If we are not having these qualities then it is high time that we should inculcate these traits in our children and make them a good citizen who are ready to be kind to others especially to the less privileged class.

Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

I think curriculum is good enough to teach children to be more humane. I remember there were many stories in NCERT English and Hindi textbooks that changed the way we thought about life. English class was always my favorite because it was mostly about moral stories. Even we had some beautiful stories and poems from authors like Munshi Premchand and Mahadevi Verma in Hindi textbooks. I think if someone has ever read those moral stories sincerely they would definitely learn a few things about life.

There is no lack of curriculum and the only problem these days is the digital or internet media, which has overtaken the books. I feel internet has changed the way children think nowadays. No matter how good the curriculum, if children have more trust on some other sources of knowledge they will never develop those desired qualities.

Humble yourself or life will do it for you!

I would simply say that moral science is the only curriculum we have been taught in schools to be more humane, however, I feel as long as the children are in their childhood they will be more humane. While they grow up they become more individualistic in achieving their dreams leaving behind their moral traits. Moreover, the present social system of a nuclear family kindles the inhuman nature of the people. The parents teach their kids to be smart/good-ranking students rather than good human beings. Sharing and caring are lacking among young adults. Those days, we all were brought up with grandparents' bedtime moral stories. The curriculum to be more humane than materialistic starts at home, which has been missing with the current familial system. Added to this, the impact of gadgets and social media minimizes the communication between children and parents. In my opinion, the reading habit (of good books) would be the best curriculum to inculcate humane traits in the children of this digital era as said above by Mr. Ajay Gupta.

It is the responsibility of the school management to take care of the development of the moral character of the students. The Headmaster or the Principal can take an active part in the development of the kids.
As far as I remember, my Headmaster thought that assigning some task to the students how they have helped the distressed people in the last week with the detailed accounts of such events. The copies were to be handed over to the teacher teaching moral sciences to know their activities. Such descriptions of the students encouraged them to go in for the jobs of social - services for the better welfare of mankind.
Of course, the curriculum in the moral - science can have positive effect on the minds of students but apart from that character - building can go side by side with the motivation of head of the school.

Yes, I agree that we have read moral stories and heard many inspirational incidents from others but how long do such things stay in our minds when we watch/hear about the corrupt practices of others in society? Moreover, only reading cannot help unless it is practised by the majority. The idea behind this post was to develop such a curriculum where more weightage would be given to practising good values rather than the weightage on good marks.
