    Do we appreciate enough?

A fabulous advertisement, released some years ago, would show a very young housewife, happily serving a dish to her husband and waiting for appreciation from him. Instead, after tasting the dish, the man would comment that it was not so good as what his mother would make!!

The message was loud and clear. The woman would be hurt, and would simply put the chutney making machine, asking her husband to make his own chutney.

Well, though the advertisement was meant to be humorous, it had a wider implication -- we do not appreciate others at all. Our wives or husbands often end up being hurt everyday.

The young child would show up her notebook and virtually look eagerly into our eyes for that one good word of appreciation. At that time, we would think about our rather nasty boss at work, and be lost in our own thoughts. The child would lose his or her patience and might just walk away.

Instances are not rare, when we lose sight of the basics of emotional intelligence and do all the wrong things. We just do not appreciate enough. We need to wake up and start appreciating others. A whole new world of happiness will start coming our way, once we do this. For, happy people all around us will simply make our lives that much more happier, at all times.

The author has come out with a very valid and good thread. Appreciation will motivate the people and they try to do much better.
An incident I will mention here. One day my MD called me and asked me for a document from the internet. I couldn't do it in the office. While going home, I met him and informed him that the next day morning I would see that it would be on his table. In the night, from my desktop, I took out that document and sent an email to his PA and asked him to keep it on MD's table before he came to the office. As usual, I went to the office and all the HODs including me met for a morning meeting. In that meeting, my MD informed all of us that he asked three HODs for a paper but only I could do it. That appreciation made me very happy. If we appreciate in presence of others it will have a very good effect on the individual.
I always make it a point to appreciate my people when they did a good thing in presence of others and pat them on their back.

A thought provoking post by the author bringing the importance of appreciation in our lives.
Appreciation is a great enabler in the sense that a proper appreciation made at a proper time can do miracles and immensely affect the future actions and behaviour of a person.
It is true that we should not make appreciation just like that after each action. That would look fake and would not make the person cheerful. Whenever there is something done by a person with hard work or due deliberation then we must acknowledge it and if it is average or above average in quality, then try to give due credit and appreciation to the creator.
So, I would say that appreciation and appreciating properly is an art and we must use it to encourage and motivate a person to do better.

A nice post by the author. Whether it is house or workplace appreciation has a big role everywhere. In the house it motivates the family members to do things in a better way while in a workplace it uplifts the morale of the workforce.
Appreciation is an entity which works in every situation. It can bring a lot of excitement and strength in the people who are working and are praised by their superiors or even colleagues.
If someone does a good job then the person who is benefited by it or the stake holder affected by it must express one's thanks and gratitude to the doer of that action. We must adopt thankfulness in our lives and for that we have to learn appreciating others.

    Thoughts exchanged is knowledge gained.

It is a nice description from the author's side. It is the attitude of human beings to hear some appreciative words if has taken pain to finish a job in a commendable way. Behaving like a miser in appreciating even ours is an attitude of ours. Appreciating our relations could go far a long way in securing their love and this basic principle is not being followed from our end.
We should go a little ahead in strengthing our relationships with some appreciative words and watch how close we are in their hearts. It is a great way of gaining respect and closeness. Whenever we have such moments we should gift our own with such a priceless gift. Watch how the relations develop.

I have seen some teachers who are biased towards some students. They appreciate the students who go for taking tuitions to them only. This behaviour is very dangerous. A teacher should not show differences between the students. They should not criticise a student who is not a fault. This will do more damage than not appreciating.
We heard many stories of step mothers treating their step children differently. That will spoil the mental health of the child and the whole life forgetting that tarchure is very difficult.

Dr Rao, I agree that if the appreciation is done for some other purpose then it is not a healthy sign because it will not benefit the recipient. The purpose of appreciation should be for further improvement.
Earlier, as I remember, our teachers and professors used to give appreciation to only the deserving candidates and not to anyone else. That is why their appreciation meant a lot for us.
Today because of too much commercialisation things are not as they were but still in many workplaces only the genuine persons get the appreciation and also get quick raises in their career.
It is necessary that people at higher positions and commanding levels must learn the art of proper appreciation of their subordinates for overall growth, progress, and prosperity of the organisation.
